Hard one to explain but here goes,we have an old samsung 32",when it goes in to some of the sky stations the picture stretchs up and down and the subtitles or whatever is gone down south but you could change back to say BBC and it would right itself again,do you think this could be the tv or the sky box or something else?

Could be a setting on the sky box, make the picture format to be letterbox/widescreen 16:9 if a widescreen tv, or 4:3/5:4 if a fullscreen square one

Sky boxes have always been really bad with aspect ratio, there is a setting on it somewhere though.

Try changing the 'scart control' option in the video options of the sky box

Scart control changes the tv station to av when you turn on your sky box. It's handy. Leave it alone.

Put the aspect ratio to 16:9 if the tv is wide or 4:3L if it isn't. The L is for letterbox (the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen). 4:3 pan and scan cuts of the sides of footage and is generally cack.

Change the Scart output to rgb to improve picture a little.

The issue is more than likely the tv being on AUTO aspect ratio. This setting cuts off black bars and stretches picture to fill the full screen but rarely gets it right.

A good tip is to watch out for circles on screen to tell if the aspect ratio is correct

I agree, but it may be off, or it may be on and is causing a problem ... I like to experiment.

sometimes scart control can do funny things - if you have a choice of RGB / CVBS then try RGB first as it's better quality and adjust the TV settings

if all else fails you could use the aerial output from the skybox to the TV
