Just got an old sky box off a neighbour in the hope of having tv when the saorview comes in. I have not been paying for any package, the irish channels worked for my neighbour on it but not in my house, it starts as channel 101 - BBC1. I still have the irish channels available on digital but I'm wondering is there anyway of tuning them in or will I need to get some of the sky packages? thanks

You will have to dig deep and pay Sky if you want to watch via St box. Have you looked at getting Saorview?

Irish channels are not available on sky without subscription.

a Saorview aproved box will give you all the irish channels for a once off cost,

12 months paying sky 25 per month = 300 (then no irish channels unless you keep paying monthly)

saorview box ~50 just connect to an aerial. (not satellite dish)

Saorview has already "come in". Is your tv relatively recent? What's the make & model? It might already be capable of decoding the Saorview signal & you may just need an aerial.

Seems the op already has saorview as they state in their post that they "have the Irish stations on digital",so they dont need anything else as they now have TV

They might have been referring to digital cable.

Thanks a million everyone for the replies, well the irish stations are working on analog as usual for now but when I switch to digital using my normal remote i'm only getting the audio and a black screen and this has remained the same since putting in the sky box, the sky box starts at BBC1. the tv is a Sony Bravia Model No: KDL-32U2000 and its about 4 to 5 years old and we have an aerial on the roof if thats any help. thanks again everyone!!

So, this would fix your OP? You need a Saorview box if you want free Irish channels after October 24th.

The TV isn't compatible with the terrestrial Saorview signal, incorrect video decoder onboard for Saorview (MPEG-2 onboard, MPEG-4 required, not upgradeable).

The Sky box is a satellite receiver (satellite dish and Sky sub required for the Irish channels) and not a Saorview terrestrial receiver so a separate Saorview STB will be required for that TV or a new Saorview TV for the Saorview channels.

The audio & blank screen is from the tv's own digital tuner, not the Sky box. As already mentioned, it can't decode the Saorview video, only the audio.

Saorview boxes are €49.99 in Argos at the moment,no need to fork out a fortune on a new tv,if the op has good analogue reception they will probably just have to plug the existing aerial in & away they go.

Nobody in this thread said anything about buying a new tv, the only purchasing advice given is in post #8, telling the OP they should get themselves a Saorview box.

Hmmm......would you say the person in post no. 8 gave good advice?

The best advice would be to ditch the sky box and purchase a combo box such as the triax tsc114 that will provide you with both the Saorview and fta satellite channels all on the one box. You will also get BBC, ITV and CH4 in High definition as a result so well worth the investment.

The box also has a built in media player that you can plug in a usb stick into the back of the box and play a variety of movie formats,mp3 music and jpeg pictures.
