Just a quick one - are there any Black judges in Ireland? Any ethnic minority actually while I'm asking.

A friend of the wifes is over from Ghana - a lawyer there - was asking and I'm have to admit I have no idea!

I doubt it very much given the experience required to be a judge , there would I imagine be very few immigrants with the years required. This country has only relatively recently seen large numbers of African immigrants.

Just for absolute clarity I'm not making any sort of point. Being English its obviously very common to have people with African ancestry are many generations English (not put very well). Read what you will into the history of the British of that particular one!

I'll have to tell her if she does manage to pass the Bar here she's in with a shot of become the first then! :D

You could have a black judge who has Irish citizenship any time if there isn't one/more already.

No: Yes, there are two judges of ethnic extraction (and a few from Cork).

Lets face it, in most countries judges tend to come from backgrounds than are much better off than average. In many places, socio-ethnic grouping (age, gender, race, tribe, community, political affiliation, religion, sect ...) and social class are proxies for each other.

The difference in Ireland compared to other countries is that until recently is that there was little variation, but the same social divides were/are there.

There is a Judge in the Naas District Court, Judge Zaidan. He is Lebanese born, but I'm not too sure on how long he has lived in Ireland, he could be here since he was a boy for all I know and mayaswell be Irish.
