ulster bank bank transfers

    hi, bit of a newbie question as i've never made a bank transfer before but in my first attempt today on my online banking account i was asked for
    a)name
    b)account number
    c)sort code
    d)reference

    first three are pretty standard but does anybody know what the "reference" may be??

    Basically what you want the reference on your statement to be "Accountancy Fees" or "Mary's Rent" things like that.
