Both have their pros and cons.

Paddington is closer to the West End, and the area has a bit of life to it.
However like all areas around major railway stations it can be noisy at and a little seedy at night. I wouldn't let that put you off though. It is a safe area and it has a far more cosmopolitan feel to it than Canary Wharf. There are some great restaurants and bars around and a walk down the nearby Edgare Road at night is a must, just to see the Lebanese smoking their Hookah pipes outside the many cafes there. If you drop in for a coffee, they might let you try one of the pipes !

Canary Wharf is on the other side of town and further out, although the Jubilee Line will get you into the West End in about 15 minutes. As you'll probably know, Canary Wharf is a business district with lots skyscrapers and multinational corporations. As such, the place is busy on weekdays with office workers, but come the evenings and weekends, it takes on a ghostly presence when all the commuters have left.

I'd opt for Paddington myself as there is more to see and do nearby, much within walking distance including Hyde Park. But it depends on what you're looking for.

When are you going ? Bear in mind the Olympic, and Paralympics take place near Canary Wharf until September 9th so transport connections to that side of London will be affected.

    Enjoy yourself.

I've just noticed you requestd to close this thread while I was replying.
Just wondering if you confused C.W. with another part of London.

Happy to help if you want to send me a PM.

Lots of good advice about London here.
