Speeding Tax for everyone ?

Just heard the rumour that the RSA intend to introduce a speeding tax for every Licensed driver in the Country next year. The tax is to be set at €80 regardless of what you drive.
At first i was outraged when i heard this ,but thinking about it ,it might not be a bad idea after all.
This will raise 100's of millions of Euros for the Government from speeding Motorists(everyone speeds at some time)without actually having as many speed cameras+vans around the place.
We all know that most speed detection is done on a revenue creating basis and nothing to do with saving lifes.
The upside of this would mean less unessecary speed traps on safe roads creating revenue, but worse still landing us all with the dreaded penalty points.
Overall i think this is a good idea if it happens, but only on the basis that the Revenue making cameras are not used in silly places.
This could also free up speed detection vehicles to be used where and when they should be used.
    Any thoughts?

*checks date to make sure it's not April 1st*

OP, wtf? Provide a link to back up your nonsense or begone with you.

'a man told me in a pub' is not evidence either.

John down the pub told me this was happening, it's gots to be true.

I call BS, there would be uproar.

I can hear it now....."Its a disgrace Joe......"

Of course in the (highly unlikely) event this is actually true it won't be called a "speeding tax" but a "safety tax". You can't say that everyone speeds but you can say that everyone should contribute to safety.

If the RSA was intent on introducing this charge why not just heap it on top of road tax where there is already a collection system/database in place or will we need a fourth disk now on top of NCT/TAX/Insurance?

Motorists are a really soft target and instead of properly revising the motor taxation system in this country the above senario is a more probable solution from the present shower of muppets. They really dropped the ball when they brought in the new tax bands (and 90% of new car buyers bought band A-C rated cars) and I reckon they could try claw it back on some notion of improving safety.

You know, some of the RSA probably read this and will now consider bumming us silly with this tax after reading "that rumor".

They lost money on it last year. €16 million to run, took in €15.8 in fines

I wonder where they pulled those figures from? How can they be sure the cameras were responsible for saving x number of lives and avoiding x number of serious injuries?

Sounds like the bin tax in Fingal.

When it came in first they justified it by saying
You only have to buy a tag for anything you throw out.
1 Year later. You are not throwing enough out so now you have to pay whether you throw it out or not and buy a tag.

    So, now what ?

Your statement doesn't shiw that I've ever sped.
