My uncle is trying to set up his tax clearance for his business on ros.ie and a file is on the computer now and when He clicks on it to open it, it asks for a private key which he does not know.

he is using windows 7 SP1 if that helps

That doesn't sound right. Can you get a screenshot of the error?

OK, I don't mean to be rude, but you haven't told us anywhere near enough about the problem for anyone to be able to help you.

It sounds like you've got a file that's encrypted under a public-key cryptographic system (see here if you're not sure what that means). If you're being asked for the private key and don't know what it is, something's gone wrong - you should only need the private key if the document you want to access is encrypted with the public key, and that should only happen when you've distributed your public key for other folks to use.

Can you find the specific set of steps on www.ros.ie that your uncle has attempted to follow and either link to them or reproduce them here? Can you tell us the details of the file he's obtained and is unable to open?

My Dad uses ROS (terrible system btw) and I think you need to register manually with ROS to get setup on the system. Maybe thats changed now, but he was always constantly on to their phone support team. From memory the certificate is used in conjunction to the login (a good ole Java servlet) and the certificate needs to be oked with ROS before hand. Also try updating Java RE, this has helped dad with ROS problems on occasion

I'm not familiar with ROS, but do they really ask users to manually manage a cert at their end?

Not the last time I used it - never had to mess around with security certs.
Maybe this has changed since I last used it though??

Used to be they'd send you out a pin in the post and you'd use this to access the system.

Business users yes, personal users no.

Contact the ROS online service for the key - this would have been provided during the installation instructions, he may have overlooked this.
I'm not 100% sure if they can re-supply keys. If not, they may have to provide a new certificate file (pfx) , which would have a new key.
