Creaking/knocking at the start of a ride?

No - I'm not talking about my knees.

I've a cheap and cheerful Carrera Subway ltd that I've had for 2 years but only really started riding about 2 months ago. It was set up correctly as far as I can tell and was checked over back in April. I keep the chain set clean and wet lubed.

Lately I've noticed a creaking or knocking noise coming from the rear of the bike that goes away after about 10 minutes riding. It's also seems more pronounced this morning after 3 days not riding the bike. It's road speed dependent, and eases when I put more weight over the front wheel.

If I were to hazard a guess I would say its spoke related but my maintenance skills are a bit limited and I would worry I could do more harm than good messing with spoke tensions if I didn't know what I was doing?

Any suggestions, short of course taking it to a shop?

    Mike

Could be all sort of things, maybe the rear hub.

I'd take it to a mechanic.

Could be a few different things alright. Have you tried tightening the skewers really tight, worked for me in a similar situation.

I've a whining/moaning noise when I start my ride, starts to go away when i go around the corner away from the house.

Does the squeak occur when you are sitting and/or standing?

    Sorry All
Been away from the boards for a couple of days...

With regards to tightening the skewers. I'd be worried that I might overdo it, as I've never adjusted spokes before. Could I end up pulling the rim out of shape?

I don't get the noise when stationary on the big, just when I'm moving. As I said before it seams to calm down then disappear over about 10 mins of riding.

    Cheers - Mike

Skewers and spokes aren't the same thing: the skewer is the quick release thingy that actually clamps the wheel into the frame. If you have a problem with loose spokes I'd say definitely take it to a mechanic unless you have a lot of time and patience to play with spoke tensions.
