Diesel Hatchback for about €5k

Hi All, need to buy a second family car which will be used for a daily 50 mile commute, mostly urban & motorway driving. Fuel efficiency / reliability are main priorities.

    Thinking of a diesel golf, ...€5k would be looking at a 2004/2005 with 60k / 70k miles.

What I'm wondering is, how fuel efficient would this be, is there any difference between the 1.9 and 2 litre and how does it compare to the newer diesel cars (Currently drive a diesel 1.6L A3 and am downgrading from it in order to upgrade the main family car to a mpv...). Also is there anything to watch out for in this year / model of car??

Any thoughts welcome or indeed suggestions for an alternative option to the Golf........Thanks for reading!

Golf 1.9 TDi generally considered more reliable than the 2.0 TDi. The 1.9TDi is older design engine, more proven. Good on diesel, I'd expect mid 50's miles per gallon.

However I think you need to reconsider your budget, and also your mileage expectations. The average miles on a diesel car is 15-20k miles per year, and 10-12k for a petrol. 60-70k miles on a 7-8 year old car would be below average on a petrol (but they are out there). On a diesel, very unlikely. Who (in 2004/5) would buy a diesel car with higher price and higher road tax, if they were not doing 15k miles / yr minimum ?

Taking a look at carzone (yes I know donedeal would be cheaper), the only 04's under 5000 have 140k-150k miles. Cars with less than 100k are asking for 6000-6500. I didn't look at 2005's.

Other alternatives would be corolla d4d, peugeot 307 hdi, astra 1.7 cdti.

For any low miles car (diesel or petrol), and for any imported car, service history and documented proof of mileage is essential. If no proof, then assume the mileage is incorrect.

Thanks a lot for that Lifer Sean..... I was wondering why done deal was so much cheaper than carzone so your advice about proof of mileage is definitely something I will be heeding. I was putting it down to the sellers there being more realistic and basing my figures on that tbh. Thanks again.:)

also look at a seat leon, skoda octavia and audi a3. all much the same as the golf. the 1.9 is the older engine but much more reliable and pleanty good enough for normal driving. servicing/parts are reasonably cheap.

dont get hung up on the millage. there are 1.9tdi's out there with 300,000 + miles on them. better off buying a higher millage one with a service history than a lower millage one with no history imo
