Shrubs/Bushes/Plants for rockery - low maintenance

I have seen quite a few rockeries or pebble covered beds in local gardens that seem to be low maintenance with various shrubs and plants.

I was thinking of doing something similar myself soon, and was wondering what types of shrubs and plants are being used?

A lot of them seem to be spherical/ball shaped, and are often close enough to grow into each other. Would this negate any need for weeding?

    Any names or advice appreciated.

Saxifraga peter pan are lovely plants suitable for a rockery. Most probably won't have flowers on now, but they look very beautiful when they do.
