Surly pacer vs Cube Peloton

    Hi,

I'm on the verge of ordering a Cube Peloton pro (Tiagra) in order to finally get off the fence but I have some reservations.

    1. It looks more expensive/thedtworthy than it is.

    2. It will have to take over as my commuter and it feels flimsy.

    3. Its main sporting use will be the odd sportive and adventure races, for the latter I again worry about flimsiness.

I have been looking at cross bikes but will only go that way if I'm going to race cross, and commuting on cantilevers isn't my favourite thought.

Setting cross aside I'm looking wistfully at the Surly pacer because while a little pricier it will be more versatile than my commuter and has the following +s and -s.

+ It's a tank and a lower key type of beautiful
    Vs
    - It's a tank on 28cm tyres

Any thoughts? Do people routinely take on the likes of Gaelforce on steel frames? How much would the extra weight punish me on a regular sportive?

The Cube is a very strong frame. Adventure races and the weight you'd be putting on it commuting would not harm the frame unless your idea of "adventure" routinely involves cycling into trees and "commuting" involves scrapes with HGV's. I don't know what wheels come on it, but I'd imagine they'd be suitable for cyclocross too (the bike isn't, but that's down to geometry and brake type, not some inherent weakness in the design of the frame). So from the "flimsiness" side of things, I don't think you need to worry about anything.

Cube make nice looking bikes. So that negative is there, although as far as negatives go, it's a pretty good one!

The Surly would be another smashing bike, but as you said, in a different way. If I planned on doing adventure races and sportives, I'd go for the Cube. Touring and audax, probably the Surly. I'd be happy to commute on either, depending on the locking scenario.

If it'll be mainly for commuting then the Pacers wins out since it can take full-length mudguards and it's been raining a bit lately.

You can get full decent mudguards for the cube as well.

if your thinking if doing the WAR races or Gaelfore races then the cube is the only competitive option.

Which full mudguards fit the Cube?

    Looks like the Cube then.

Will defeat my security strategy of always locking next to guccier bikes with inferior locks...
