After years of shooting I will hopefully soon have my first gundog. A GSP. I researched the topic to death and finally picked a pup. I may have over researched it as I've had a lot of contradicting advice.

Anway, I'm in North Dublin and I'm wondering if any nearby HPR Dog owners (specifically GSP's) would consider helping me out with this daunting task. I have all the land permissions / space I need but would love some practical advice or to have my dog have a run with yours...

Obviously this won't be for a few months as he's currently just 9 weeks old!! It's the basics, like stop / recall etc that I want to start on from now. The literature I've found says lots about field training but not much about the early days when he's confined to the house before his boosters etc. That's the stuff I want to get right... HELP!

Hi I have a gsd bitch I'm training at the moment..firstly pick a command and stick with the same word for tasks...the likes of stop and go I used a long rope and simply said wait and a gentle tug
Gsds are hyper intelligent and quick learners they thrive to please their master mine will obey everything I ask and ignore others commands..your best starting training young..oh and a little treet for being good makes progress better..fetch with a stick and retrieve to master helped with bringing the kill back without hiding and eating it

say what ya mean ! and mean what ya say .

I don't know anything about training pointers their not my thing but I do know about springers and labs.

For early days I reckon it matters little about the breed. You need to build up a partnership with the dog. Down the road you will want the dog to work with you not for you if you know what I mean.

Here's a few videos from our resident pointer expert.

All well worth the watch and fair play to EP for making them.
