Second Chance Student

    Hey everyone,

I started a course in Law at the University of Limerick in September 2008, and dropped out in June 2010 due to family issues. I have just completed a Level 5 Fetac course in Business, and am moving on to the Level 6 equivalent this September.

I intend to return to Uni eventually, and am wondering would I would qualify as a second chance student if I return in 2015? I am a bit confused as I hope to complete the Level 6 course, and move on to an add-on degree (level 7) in LIT. Since the second chance student rule states that a student will be approved if they are returning following a break of 5 years to study a course a the same level of before, would I still qualify if I completed a Level 7 add-on course (paid the years fees myself), due to the fact that it is below my previous Level 8 course.

Considering that the Law course I studied was an undergraduate bachelor of arts degree (level 8), would I not qualify as a second chance student if I pay the fee for the add on course at LIT (it is one year in duration)?

I know my situation sounds really complicated, but I was previously told that if I was to return to university immediately, I would be liable for fees for Years 1 & 2 of a new course. Hope somebody can clear this up, as my head is in knots just thinking about it. :o

To be honest no-one can really say what the rules will be in three years time. The second chance student rule could be abolished in the meantime.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I have actually being reading the terms of the second chance rule, and I am confused as to whether you have to be out of education for 5 years full stop, or just not pursuing a course at the same level, ie wait 5 years before you can attempt another Level 8 degree course:

''A ‘second chance student’ is someone who is aged over 23, did not successfully complete an earlier course and is returning to pursue an approved course after at least 5 years.''

Does this mean that you cannot pursue a PLC Level 5 & 6 course in the mean time between when you dropped out (2010), and when you can return after 5 years (2015)? - seems an awful waste to not be allowed continue to educate yourself while waiting the 5 years. There are hardly any jobs out there, especially for an unqualified individual, so my only available options are to keep myself busy with these PLC courses.
