Right so there are god knows how many Clubs and societies in UCD.
Every year we have a thread for incoming and present students which Boardsies who are in the society/club or on the committee can give some info and a plug for the society/club.

Personally I'm The Auditor of the Architecture Society this year, otherwise known as Arcsoc which is one of the oldest societies in UCD dating from 1927.

    213516.jpg

We are a medium size society of around 200-250 students based in Richview (usually one of the numerous "tasks" given in the freshers guides of things to do/ places to find). As the name suggests we are a society that generally caters for and is run by architecture students, though about 15-20% of members that join are not studying architecture.

    We mainly do 4 things.

1- Nights out: We have a night out every 2 weeks or so. These are usually themed including Halloween night, Movember night out and valentines.
Pre-drinks 7:30-9:30 in Richview Inc. Free Beer and Free Wine.
(Last year we did not run out of drink at any event)
Which is followed by a bus to town and a nightclub.

2- Classes: Generally we have a Yoga Class in first semester and an life drawing class in second semester. We're planning to extend these to CAD classes and Photoshop classes this year.

3- European trip: Every January we have a.....ahem...."study" trip to European city, Last year was Prague and the year before that was Berlin. This year will probably be Krakow. Cheapest flights/Accommodation/drink dictates where we go. Trip does be 5 days long.

    4- The Arcsoc Ball.
Drinks reception, 3 course meal and Dj set is what to expect at the ball.
This year 230 of us descended on the Guinness Brewery and the Gravity bar. One of the best night views of Dublin up there.

As already said the majority of members are architects but we're completely open to all new members. And if any of your friends are starting to study architecture this year, you should join the society or you'll never see them again :D

Honourable incoming and current students of UCD,
    Дорогие Товарищи,

I am Irina, the new auditor of the glorious and almighty UCD Russian Society for 2012/2013. Having been part of building up this society from the ground as Enlightenment Officer, I'm very pleased to say that the past year has been one filled with much progress!

At the beginning of 2011 we were 50 to 100 years behind all of the other societies. We realised that either we make good the difference in one year, or we will be crushed. We have completed and overfulfilled our one-year plan. Our next one-year plan is currently in deployment, the outlines of which are below:

    • Screening of Soviet and Russian films
    • Food tasting parties
    • Getting scarlet red society hoodies
    • Joint events with societies (Christmas parties, New Year Celebrations)
    • Nights out on the tiles
    • Free Russian lessons from us, the committee
    • History discussions
    • Russian game nights, chess, cards.
    • 1 week trip to Russia in 2013
    • Many more to come
Most of the events we provide are free rolleyes.gif

We're calling all history buffs, culture enthusiasts and admirers of our Russian ways! Whether you're into old Soviet films, language , literature and poetry, free snacks or simply would like to make new friends from all types of backgrounds, this is the society for you.

The friendly and active committee would be delighted and honoured to have comrades join us in September at Fresher's Week. The Central Committee consists of
    • Auditor Irina Antonenko
    • Treasurer Alexey Tarutin
    • Secretary Anton Katayev
    • Enlightenment Officer Alena Blizhnikova
    • Web Design Officer Daniela Mueller
    • Development of intelligence Officers Timothy Price and Sam Weiss

We are open to any suggestions and ideas and love to try new things. Our aim is to share Russian culture, traditions and history, provide a platform where our comrades can meet new friends and just have fun!

Join our forces and together we will drive the master one-year plan to completion.

UCD Karate Club is current holder of the Intervarsity Championship title, having successfully defended the title they won in 2011. It's a great club with an active social element to it as well.

UCD Dance Society is one of the most active societies in UCD! With over 1,000 members last year in it's very first year! This year is set to be another big one for DanceSoc as we are hosting the National Inter-Varsity Competition on campus. We run four classes a week in the brand new studio in various styles! We also have three dance crews that perform at various events around Dublin. Where to begin?

    225415_101768409913948_4467476_n.jpg

Joining UCD TKD, is quite possibly the best decision I made during 4 now 5 years of college. And I’ve been a member of a ton of the sports club in UCD. On the social side of things UCD TKD has some of the most friendly and crazy (in a good way) people on campus. Highlights of our social calendar include Freshers Nights, Ice skating at Christmas, Christmas Party, Karaoke, Movie Nights, a Club Trip in semester two. And regular trips to the bar (when it opens again) after training and into town. We also have a great ents office this year with big plans this year for extra fun, such as zombie survival courses around Halloween, themed nights out and much more. So now is the perfect time to join

In terms of the sport itself Taekwondo gets really addictive and there’s something for every to find in the training. Whether its learning a traditional martial art you’re interested in, or fitness and flexibility or sparring or even just self defence, we have it all. Sparring is possibly the biggest part of the club, for those that are worried the club is all about traditional movements. The club is ITF style taekwondo so we use are hands a lot and the style is closer to kickboxing then what you might have seen in the Olympics. Having said that we accommodate all styles including WTF, or other federations international students might be a part of.
The club is very successful in terms of competitions and has some very high quality coaches. Past members have included world and european champions. And there are still some former world and current national champions actively participating and coaching with the club. We attend roughly 5 provincial and one big national competition a year as well as intervarsities. This just means more trips away and we usually find time to go out during these weekends. We’ll also be hosting more internal competitions this year and hope to work with some of the other colleges around Dublin to organise more competitions between us. ( As we do with Trinity every year.) We also participate in other taekwondo and kickboxing events around Dublin from time to time. On top of this we will be having seminars throughout the year with some of the best instructors in the country including the Irish Team coach. There will also be opportunities to attend Irish Team Squad Sessions around the country.

We have training four times a week, which is more training then most sports clubs in UCD and more than any other marital club in UCD. The times are Monday 8-10, Tuesday 6-8, Thursday 5-7 and Fri 1-3. People can attend as many or as little as they chose but with so many sessions its a great opportunity for someone that wants to train a lot or for someone that has a hectic schedule and can only train at different times each week.

Fitness is another huge part of the club and joining will gain you access to a core and strength fitness group which has fitness only class, mostly in the style of circuit type training you’ll see at the gym but with a ton of really cool exercises you won’t have seen before and will really burn. The group is called core and strength for a reason, we do a ton of core but also some weight training for guys that are interested as well as using kettlebells and olypmic rings for people that interested in these types of sessions. Again you only have to do the exercises that suit your fitness goals, and these classes are in addition to the regular training times!

Equipment will be provided by the club for each session so you won’t be strapped for cash having to buy your own equipment. If you get really into the sport like many do though it will be worth the investment.

We subside a good deal of the cost for our competitions and the cost is only €10 for the whole year! Well worth it when you consider all the free training, social events, trips away and equipment usage. If you’re interested in joining or want more detail on anything drop by the stand next week in the sports centre in Hall B Monday to Thursday to ask any questions. Also find us on facebook for some awesome promos and more info! UCD TKD page.

    Cheers Guys

If anybody is interested in volunteering, I would really recommend joining the SVP society on campus. We're not all about volunteering as we have numerous social and fundraising events throughout the year but volunteering is of course what we're mainly about.

We're the biggest charity society on campus with over 600 members and by far one of the most active societies in UCD (and arguably the oldest). We run 14 activities every week such as the soup runs, homework clubs, youth clubs, visitations and flat decorating. A full list of activities can be found here: http://www.ucdsvp.com/activities (click on each activity to find out more about it). The activities are fantastic, both challenging and rewarding.

As well as our work outside UCD, we also help those in need in UCD. Students who are in urgent need of financial assistance can apply to our emergency welfare fund at any time throughout the year.

On top of our volunteering activities and welfare fund, we also run social and fundraising events. Homeless Week is our biggest fundraising event which takes place in early November. Here, students sleep outside the library from Monday until Friday to raise awareness of homelessness in Ireland. We also fundraise throughout the week with plenty of musicians busking for us on campus. SVP Day will be held in semester 2 while there are the usual SVP Ball, pub crawls, coffee mornings and talks throughout the year. We hopefully will have a Freshers Weekend this year up in Bundoran as well.

If you're in any way interested in getting involved with SVP this year, come down to our stand at the Freshers tent to sign up and come along to our Information Talks in the Astra Hall on Monday 24th (1pm) and Tuesday 25th (4pm) of this month. I'll be at our stand during Fresher's Week so feel to ask any questions you may have.

Also, 'like' us on facebook to get regular updates of what we're up to: https://www.facebook.com/ucdsvp

    Hello,

We are delighted to announce that the UCD Judo Club will be starting training from 21 January 2013 at UCD Sports Halls: Tue. 3-5 pm, Thu. 2-4 pm.

Judo is perfect for men and women and you do not need to be huge or strong, as you learn to take down an opponent with the least force, using his momentum and center of gravity. Judo is perfect for self defence and it is at the core of MMA and UCF ground-work training. Members will not need to buy any gear - you can train in an old tracksuit if you wish!

We need Members. If you are interested in joining the new UCD Judo Club then please join at our stand on UCD Refreshers Day 30th January 2013. Instead you can contact us now at ucdjudoclub@gmail.com. Experience is not essential.

We need Committee Members. We need Judo enthusiasts for all the committee positions. If you would like to be part of the new UCD Judo Club and its committee then let us know and we will contact you straight after Christmas Exams. Soon after these exams we will email you the details of the first AGM. It will be held in UCD before Christmas. This is when the club committee will be elected.

We need a Coach. If you have 1st Dan or higher and maybe would like to coach, then let us know as we are in the process of selecting one! Experience is beneficial but not essential.

Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for any updates.
    https://www.facebook.com/ucdjudoclub

Kindest regards and Good Luck in your exams,

    UCD Judo Club
