Need to take out insurance for camera & lenses - any suggestions?

Should there be a separate policy?

If you're strictly amature, and have house insurance, contact your insurer to see what your current cover on your gear is. It might be covered enough already, or be inexpensive to add. But be sure to check both the amount of cover, and the circumstances in which you could claim (theft, theft outside your home, loss, damage etc). And any excess. And then decide then if it's enough, or if you need separate insurance.

If you're in any way a pro, get separate, dedicated insurance.

I checked recently with my household policy and it covers me, including theft/loss outside the home. They said they may need to add a optional cost for it but when they checked I was already paying the optional anyway. I'm covered up to 7000 so easily covers my stuff - strictly amateur.

what do they mean by loss?
usually insurance policies insist on due care being taken, so if it's your fault the camera is lost, they will probably refuse to cough up.
