I assume there's no such thing as an emergency drivers license in Ireland?

Unfortunately I've mislaid my drivers license and am due to rent a car tomorrow :eek:

I guess I won't be renting the car

Get your documents together, signed and witnessed, go to your local motor tax office and explain the situation. They should be able to issue a replacement there and then. Cork county council used issue licences over the counter as a matter of course, not sure if they still do, so any council can do it, they chose not to.

theyl give you a form in the motor tax office to get stamped by a garda to stay youve lost your licence, go back with the form and 2 passport photos signed at the back and 5 euro and youl get your licence there and then.

It's still done down here in Cark.

Figured it might be, got my first provisional there in person. I can't see why it can't be done like that everywhere. It takes them as long to check the documents and issue a receipt as it does to issue the damn license. Seems like some kind of restrictive working practice, maybe the licenses are printed and posted on overtime, perhaps the 'Croke Park Agreement' can sort it out, but I doubt it.

Cork appear to be the only place left (that I'm aware of) that will issue a licence over the counter. It is, however, worth a try anyway - not that any MTO is open this late!

Kildare will put one in that day's post if asked for before 12 or so; I had both my first full and a reissue after a washing machine incident arrive next day. Postal applications, however, take 5-7 weeks!
