    anyone ever tried this cycle? how many kms? how safe is the old N3?

    The old N3 is OK. The road is in good condition from Clonee to the Fairyhouse roundabout, with a bus lane for the majority of that stretch. After that the road surface gets a bit rougher. There's little-to-no hard shoulder for a few hundred meters until you get around the corner just after that roundabout. A few kms outside Dunshaughlin the bus lane starts again.

    There is a pinch in the road through Rathbeggan which if a car pass you at that point can be close. But I hate the road stretch around there. Very boring. I tend to bypass it through batterstown if possible.
