Hi, I want to do the English modules of the arts degree with Oscail DCU distance learning. This is to add English as a subject to my existing H Dip qualification.

I know that you can't get a grant if you go back a level, i.e. I am doing an undergraduate course after doing a degree and a h dip, but I know that you get a grant if you are improving your existing qualification, which is what i am doing.

Does anyone know if I am eligible for a fees grant?

Who would you be applying to for this grant? You can get a tax credit for it, if thats what you're talking about

I don't know. Can you get a grant for distance learning courses?

I'm not sure but I don't think so. You are improving your existing qualification but you are not progressing through the framework ~ I think you can only get a grant for one level 8 course and from your post I think you may already have received a grant for your level 8 qualification, so you would not be entitled to another grant for another level 8 qualification.
You will be entitled to a 20% refund as part of your tax credits. You may also be entitled to a partial refund from the teacher refund scheme which has an office in Marino College, send them an email and make an enquiry.

You can't get a grant for distance learning courses, also you need to be progressing up the levels ...ie level 8 to level 9 not level 9 to level 8.

Can you tell me more about this? I have my undergraduate degree & my masters and I'm starting the PDGE this September. Would I be eligible to claim any of my fees back for this year?

You are entitled to a 20% of the fees tax credit. You can't avail of the Teacher Fee Refund Scheme as that is for qualified teachers, serving in schools who undertake courses.

You have to be a qualified teacher who undertakes a course while working to apply for a refund under this scheme AFAIK.

Perfect thanks for that. Do I need to do anything to get the 20% tax credit or is it automatically applied?

You're taking on a lot, you'll be flat out 7 days a week. The pgde is busy. Don't let onto the pgde college that you're doing another course you're not meant to be doing anything else. Fair play though if you handle I'd say schools will be well impressed, it's a massive undertaking. You won't have time for any part time work. What are your other subjects? If they're popular and uv a good chance of work next year you could do it then and get the refund scheme

I don't think it is automatic. I contacted the tax office and let them know and then they credited it to my tax credits I think. Another year I kept the receipts and then at the end of the year I received a cheque! Good luck!
