I'm looking for a tool that supports wifi direct.
I have a laptop with Intel 6250 wifi card & an android phone that supports wifi direct. There is some software on the phone, but I can't find anything for my linux box. Any ideas?

I know very little about this but this may be of interest .....

Apparently only one of the devices needs to be WiFi Direct certified -- so don't worry that your PC doesn't support it, as long as your smartphone does you should be good to go ..... so I read ... ;)

I'm more and more confused. According to this [1] wifi direct is just a software thing, so any device supporting wifi can support wifi direct (the device driver has to make it possible).

I don't have access to anything that supports Wifi Direct and have never played with it :(

Reading from that link you posted, it appears that switching a device to Wifi Direct essentially makes it an access point, to which a second device can connect, and once done files can be transferred etc.

I would try the following ...... turn on Wifi Direct on the phone (which will automatically disconnect it from any Wifi router it may have been connected to)

Then try setting up the wireless device in a PC and see if it finds the Wifi Direct phone when it searches for access points.

I must emphasise that the above is ALL conjecture on my part, based on my interpretation of the little reading I have done.

Keep us posted on your results of tests please ;)

I tried it (yesterday), it all makes perfect sense and ... doesn't work. there is no new wifi. I tried to force connection is nace it's hidden, but no luck. The only time when I tested it and it worked was with 2 S2 phones on stock (android gingerbread) firmware. I might check if stock firmware on one phone and cm9 on the other works...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi_Direct

That suggests that the devices initially connect ad-hoc then do a "Protected Setup-style transfer". The article also mentions negotiation as to which device is the access point (implemented in software).

Assuming the phone would act as the AP your computer might not need specific device drivers but would probably need at least an application to manage the setup.

Would need more details that that article provides to try to do it manually.

I have some strange problems with wpa_supplicant (missing control file, the rest works fine), so I can't test this:

Looks like wpa_cli should allow to try to establish connection or at least "see" the other wifi device.

I thought it is a bit easier. As described in Humberts post (wiki), you have to enable and activate WPS in your Eircom broadband modem and your phone can connect to the eircom modem.

    I want a direct connection phone-laptop or phone-raspberry PI.

The WPS you're talking about is for setting up a normal wifi connection between router and a device.
