What sort of sport? What level of sport? How near/far will you be from the action?

Mainly club rugby j3 to senior and athletics... for rugby the max width a pitch can be is 70 meters but few are that wide. Id say the furthest would be around 50 meters. On average 15-25 meters. Athletics im going to say around 50 as well.

    Nikon d90 or d200 + 70-300 f/4-5.6. Not amazing but very decent.

    About 700 total.

Basically, any Canon SLR would do just as good, with maybe a 18-200mm lens would do.

Either buying Nikon or Canon would be best advised. Whatever you go for, best advice - hold one in your hands before you buy.
