    Hi,

My Polo just failed the NCT on emissions. It was .04 when it should be .02 apparently! Does this mean a new cat or what are the options?

    Cheers

I'm guessing that's CO levels yeah? My BMW failed lastweek on emmissions, the CO levels were 0.56% when they should have been less than 0.3%. Passed this morning with 0.01% CO.
All I did was change the air-filter, fill the tank and added 500ml of Dipetane before driving (a lot) between tests.
Maybe give that a go, certainly worked for me :)

It could be a number of things, and maybe something simple like a service and some Dipetane could fix it
Can you post all numbers from the NCT sheet? Just so we know what number we are talking about here.

High Idle CO 0.40 vol % which is above the 0.20% limit. The low idle was grand.

CO Failure is the result of an excessively rich air fuel mixture. The following is a list of the most common causes:
    - Defective Oxygen Sensor
    - Inoperative Air Injection System (if equipped)
    - Leaking or defective Fuel Injectors
    - Restricted air filter (especially if high CO is present only at high RPM)
    - Vacuum leaks resulting in improper MAP sensor operation
    - Defective air mass or air flow sensor
    - Malfunctioning fuel evaporation system or purge valve
    - Defective Catalytic Converter
    - Defective thermostat (cooling system), thermostat stuck open
    - Oil contaminated with fuel, excessive miles between oil changes
I'd start with new air filter and have an exhaust centre look for leaks and the sensor.
