    HI,

I have just moved into new apt on castleknock/blanch border. I need to get back out running. Are there any tracks nearbye or good routes people can recommend. I am starting back into the C25K programme tonight!!

    Cheers

I do a loop of Luttrelstown/Carpenterstown and the clonsilla rd. It's not a bad run and the bridge over the railway tracks is always a nice hill to take on.

Along the canal towards town can be quite nice.

was considering the canal as the apt is right beside it however................

does the track go under the main rds that bridge over the canal or do I have to leave the canal track and cross the rd and resume on the track on the other side?

How safe is it?? Drunks/junkies etc?

Is the path level and suitable for runnning?

    thanks

Maynooth is a nice run, but it can be a little mucky till you get to clonsilla, its not too bad from there on out.

I often run in towards town, its' really only around the back of croke park you get the odd junkie, but to be honest none of them have ever bothered me. The path is pretty good heading all the way in towards town, a few puddles just before you get to ashtown, but nothing too bad.

I ran it a couple of weeks ago from town up to the 12th lock and it was fine. Nobody at all between the 12th lock and Ashtown and that part is 2.7km without having to cross a road so you could run there and back for your 5km. There's a couple of bumps where the locks are but other than that pretty flat.

Running inthe other direction there's a few more roads to cross but from memory only at Coolmine, Porterstown and Clonsilla and then it's pretty much road free. Nicer scenery and a little hillier.

Porterstown park is just up the road from you, if you follow the footpath all the way around it is exactly a mile. Great park for running in, quiet too most of the time. I like it there but doing laps doesn't bother me like it does other people.

Canal between Clonsilla and Coolmine can be a bid muddy :p But it is geting upgraded around Clonsilla.

Millennium Park in Blanch or Porterstown Park on Luttrellstown Road are both fine with a mix of grass and paths.

As is Castleknock to Coolmine - ran there for the first time last week and it was like a jungle by the time I got to Coolmine. :)

If your beside the 12th lock, then porters town is a good 2 miles (maybe more) out along the canal towards maynooth.

What sort of distances are you looking to cover?

From the 12lock down to ashtown is a lovely run, I do it a few times myself each week. You can then turn around or can go out by the 1/2 way house and into the pheonix park. Or swap to the other side of the canal and head down towards broom bridge (which is a really nice path too).

The handy thing about running along the rail line is there's mile markers from Connelly station on it. I think the 4.25 mile mark is directly behind the 12th lock pub.

    Hi Frag

Dilbert is probably right, porterstown is a little bit away from you, unless you drive there. I'll give you directions anyway in case you do decide to go there some day. From your apt drive through Blanch village, turn left at the garden house chinese restaurant, keep going straight for about a mile or so, you will see a spar and a big molloys off licence on your left, once you pass these you will come to a roundabout, take a left at the roundabout. Continue on straight till you cant go straight any longer, take a left at the junction. the park is beside the church you will see when you turn left. Its a 5 min drive from the 12th lock.

    Wowzer

Appreciate the replies. As for distance I am going to ease myself back into it so won't be covering huge distance just yet. I'm thinking time moreso than distance. 30-40 mins should be a good start.

You are right beside the park there so that's where i would head :)

    Which park?

The pheonix park, you probably don't realise your so close if your not from the area.

If your in the apts at the twelveth lock, just turn right and run down to the Castleknock road, about 100m, up the steps, turn left and go straight. That will take you via Castleknock village straight into the park.

Or if you go over the m50 on the foot bridge from the 12th lock, just go straight, along the navan road by the race course, and take a right and your at the ashtown gate.

Oh and if you pass anyone on either of them routes with a red camel back, that's probably me ;-)

But for a 5k run, just head down the canal towards ashtown, it's just fab.
