I own a dvd player with surround sound system.
The dvd player does not work anymore, however the surround sound speakers still work.
I was wondering if i can buy a dvd player on its own to work with my existing surround sound system?

Ps.I would prefer to get a recordable dvd player.

What inputs are there for external devices to feed into the surround sound system? If there are HDMI inputs then you can buy any DVD or Blu-Ray player, connect it up and away you go.

If your surround sound was all together in one box then there's a good chance you'll need an amp. What are the connections you have?

I've attached a photo of a speaker to this post.
The red or black clip is pushed down and bare wire is inserted into the speaker

Right, in that case you will need an amplifier and a seperate DVD/Blu ray player. The DVD player that comes with the "home theater in a box" sets has an integrated amp but as far as I know, they don't sell DVD players like that by themselves.

What sort of budget did you have in mind?

My dvd player/surround sound system was originally quiet cheap
(maybe 250 Euro a few years ago).

Would it be worthwhile putting an expensive amplifier with a cheap surround sound speakers?

I have no idea how much an amplifier should cost
I was thinking of spending around 100 Euro.

How did you come to that conclusion from a blurry photo of the rear of a speaker?

The OP has a unit which obviously includes an surround sound amplifier. A lot of those systems have inputs to attach other components so in all probability what he could do is buy a new DVD/Blu-Ray player and connect it to the rear of his existing setup, that would be the cheapest solution.

OP, can you give us the make and model of your unit please. Forget the speakers by the way, just get the model from the back of the main unit.

I simply saw that it used conventional cabling. I have only ever used two of the home theatre in a box setups before and neither of them had inputs (they were just DVD players that you plugged speakers into) so I didn't realise you could plug other devices into it.

If it does have inputs then just buying a DVD/Blu ray player would be the cheapest thing to do.

You should be able to plug in an external DVD player. I pulled this screenshot from the manual. I would test it out by borrowing a friend's DVD player first though, just to make sure it's all still working fine.

No, sorry but that is not really a viable solution. The video quality will be terrible if you feed the picture into a single video phono socket.

I was hoping the OP's box might have HDMI 'in' ports or at least component video in. That single yellow video 'in' port is known as composite video and represents the bottom of the pile as far as quality is concerned.

OP, by all means borrow a friend's DVD player and try it but don't expect much in terms of picture quality, you'll probably need to buy a new system.

Agreed, picture quality will be weak but short of buying a new system, it's really the only option. If OP doesn't mind the quality, it will work.

Well obviously he wouldn't use the video input, another DVD player will have its own scart or hdmi for that, but it's still pointless as the sound input is only stereo, so no surround sound.

Coolguy, you'd be better off putting your €100 towards another all in one system (ther are a few on amazon just over your budget) or saving for a separate AV amp and speakers, www.tsn-versand.de is a good place to look, and a hell of a lot cheaper than here or the UK, plus they only charge €25 delivery, I've used them before, good service.

The OP has possibly already purchased but if not, he could go with something like a Sony BDPS550 Blu-ray player.
It has analogue 7.1 surround outputs which he could plug his existing speakers into and of course he could also play Blu Ray discs in addition to DVDs.

That wouldn't work, the outputs on the Sony are not amplified signals, just line outs, they need a separate amplifier to drive the speakers.

Thanks, hadn't spotted that & was considering it as I'm in a similar situation myself. Easiest to just buy a new all in one system & bin the speakers then I think.
