09 Octavia Engine Oil

    Hi,
I have a 09 Scoda Octavia Hatch 1.9 TDI and I will be soon changing the oil myself. I am a little confused as to what oil to use. The correct oil must be used for this PD engine so I want to get it right, while not going too crazy on price if possible. The manual states to use specification VW506.01 or 507.00. However, I am unsure as to what viscosity to use, 5W40, 5W30? I will be servicing the car at fixed service intervals, i.e. every 10 thousand miles. As the manual does not mention which viscosity oil to use, would I be correct in assuming that it doesn’t matter once the specification is right? I presume it would need a fully synthetic oil? Is the 507 more recent/expensive than the 506.01?
Could anyone recommend an oil for this vehicle?

5w30 oil that meets 507.00 spec is best for your car. Castrol Edge 5w30, Fuchs Titan GT1 5w30 are two commonly available oils that meet the spec. But any reputable brand that has the 507.00 spec on the can should be fine to use.

Check out options for getting a local garage to do the oil service as well as costing the DIY option. It is possible to get an oil service done on your car for €75. By the time you have bought oil and a filter, done the work and disposed of the waste oil it may not be worth the hassle. Particularly when you factor in the benefit of having a garage stamp in your service book when it comes to resale or trade in time.

Thanks George. Would I be wrong to think this 'Longlife' oil would last me more than 10 thousand miles? I do roughly 20 thousand a year.

The garages must be getting the oil a lot cheaper if some will do a service for €75! I will check that option out for sure.

Expensive oil alright, but if it prevents serious damage it's worth every penny. Thanks again

Yes you would be wrong :D Leaving the oil in these for any longer than 10k miles is just asking for trouble IMO.
