Public Holidays & Annual Leave

    No matter how many times I read it - I can't make out the situation.

    If I work full time, all year round and get 20 days annual leave are the 9 public holidays in addition to this or deducted from this?

    If they come from it and then there is good friday, and 1/2 days over Christmas as the office is closed, this is leaving 8/9 days of real holidays a year.

    Public holidays are in addition to your 20 days. Good Friday is not a public holiday and some businesses will close and deduct this day from your annual allowance but that will be stated in your contract, this can also apply to christmas.

    ....and if you are on annual leave when a bank holiday falls, you are still entitled to have a day for that bank holiday.

    Thanks, i feel like i'm being screwed in the place i work - I rarely take two weeks summer holidays each year yet seem to owe them time. I'll ask for a breakdown of the holiday days they've deducted.

    slightly off topic, dunnes in tipp town s.c. are now hireing on a three month contract, holliday pay and bank holliday and now kaput.

    Just by asking the boss - I have an excellent relationship with him, this has been the only issue i've ever had with working in the place. He'll have no issue giving me a breakdown of the days.

    Just on this aside from the 2/3 days of 27/28/29 December (possible working days assuming not falling on a weekend) and good Friday are there any other days that might come out of my annual leave i've somehow missed?

    Maybe start requesting them by email if that's an option? It's handy for going through what you've already used up.

    Unless your company have a set week where they close, like a week in August, then no, Christmas and Good Friday are the only ones that I can think of and even at that, not all businesses deduct them from your holidays, it depends entirely on your contract.

    Check with them again regarding days around Christmas time. For example, if Christmas Day falls on a Wednesday and St Stephen's Day on a Thursday many offices will not open on the Friday but generally staff are not entitled to this day off and it will be deducted from AL allocation.

    It's the same with other "moveable" holidays such as New Year's Day or St Patrick's Day falling on a Thursday - the business may decide to remain closed on the Friday.
