Sea and open water

    Hey everybody,

Ok to be honest, I'm absoloutely terrified of being in open water, of being in sea water, deep water, etc, but i dont mind being in swimming pools, like really really deep swimming pools, its just sea water and open water.

I think it's because of the idea that there could be something in there that i cant see or have no idea of, I dont know how to describe it, But the idea I suppose of something lurking in the water around me and especially deep water at that where i cant see the bottom, scares the ****e out of me. It's pretty annoying considering my girlfriend loves sailing and has trophies and everything for it and she also loves surfing too, and she would love to do all of those things with me, except we cant because she knows my phobia, but the thing is, I'm a pretty decent swimmer too, its not the idea of drowning, i think it's just the idea of sea creatures and not knowing where the bottom is and whats there i suppose.

Hard one to call considering i'd absoloutely love to go surfing!

Does anybody have any suggestions.. advice.... anything at all would be very much appreciated. Hope to hear from somebody soon.

I have exactly the same phobia and nobody seems to understand it as I'm a pretty decent swimmer. Like you said - its not to do with drowning, its the unknown. I dont like not knowing what is lurking around my legs while I'm in the water. Have never had a bad experience with water but did have a terrifying nightmare as a child (5 yrs old) that something was trying to crawl in the bottom of the bed and eat my feet...so I'm assuming the deep water phobia is an extension of that.

I know that doesnt help you but I felt compelled to share, :o
