The inner workings of some of the world's biggest machines. Engineer-turned-comedian Tom Wrigglesworth and mechanical engineer Rob Bell watch as a 14-year-old Boeing 747 jumbo jet is taken apart and reassembled in an aircraft hangar in Cardiff, and learn what its component parts reveal about how it works. They also visit an aeroplane salvage centre in the Cotswolds to discover what happens to aircraft at the end of their working lives.

According to that article there are 20,000 constituent parts to a 747.

I read somewhere during the week that there are 6 million parts.

Anyway, this looks good this evening, cheers for the heads up OP !

    Am looking forward to it.

The 747 is a great plane, pity 747-8i sales aren't too good..

Good programme. Very interesting to see the extent they go to for safety alone.

Great programme, makes me all the more excited about flying on a BA 744 to New York in three weeks time! :)

It is. If you look at the depth of knowledge of the 747 in the Cardiff maintenance facility too, it would make you wonder about BA's (and many other worldwide airlines) switch from 747's to A380's. So basically all that 747 knowledge is gone when BA no longer operate 747's in about 10 years time

Did anyone catch the reg of the 747 featured by the way?

Great shout OP, was very interesting! It's amazing to see things like the inside of a fuel tank, not to mention the 1st class beds!

    The aircraft was G-CIVX

Great show. Really enjoyed that. Crazy amount of fuel it takes, enough to fill 3,500 cars!!!

Ha the presenter thought the center fuel tank was cramped, its like a hotel compared to a 737 classic!!!
