I bought a jar of pickled red cabbage in lidl the other day, I really love it! But after washing the sauce pan there was some left in the sink, I said I'd clean it out later on but by the end of the day after water being run down the sink a couple of times, the bits of cabbage left turned blue :O Is this normal?? It's kind of putting me off eating it now!

Nothing to worry about. Science in action.

Red cabbage water at different pHs.

Raw "red" cabbage is more bluey-purple than it is red and it's only the addition of vinegar that makes it that bright red colour. Remember litmus paper strips in chemistry lessons at school for measuring pH levels? It's a similar kind of reaction.
