Relocating from Dublin to Clare

Hoping people can give me some sound advice. My fiance has been renting outside Ennis for the past couple of months. He is currently working in Shannon and I am hoping to relocate from Dublin to live with him.

We both grew up in Dublin suburbs and being in our late 20s, like to socialise. In saying that, we like the relaxed lifestyle rural areas have to offer. There are certainly lots of fabulous houses up for sale all over Clare at present....but we aren't sure where to begin.

Obviously, location is key. We hope to have children further down the line and would need to take this into consideration also.

I'd really love some positive feedback from the people of Clare as to where the best location (in your opinion) for us to purchase would be.

There are a lot of settled travellers in ennis but dont let that put you off buying a house,if its too cheap thats probably the reason why, theres a lot of anti social behaviour with them, check out the neighbourhood of houses before you set your heart on buying one,its worth checking at the hours that there would be most activity, just so you get an accurate depiciton of the place you are settling into..
Clare is a great place to live most would make great neighbours, they are a very local and persoanble type of people, the downside of it though, news spreads fast, good and bad,so there is that, but the upside is at least you know whats going on,the bush telegraph works very well, there are plenty of lovely local shops to find around ennis they also have great antique furniture shops which would be great for doing up the house..

Quin is a beautiful village and is located close to Ennis and it is only a short commute to Shannon.

What the hell is that about

Christ almighty surely that the same for most towns in Ireland.

Op, do not let the above post sour your view of Clare.

Clare is a great place to live, loads of gorgeous, friendly villages if village life is what you are after. Quin, Ballynacally, Lissycasey, Tulla, Kilnamona are all nice and a very short commute to Ennis, 15/20 minutes max.

Ennis has some lovely neighbourhoods and great schools. My children go to Ennis CBS and it is a fab school.

Thanks so much for the replies. I'm certainly gaining information from them. We've come by Quin on one of our many drives. it certainly looks to be a beautiful place. cratloe looked lovely too. would these places be considered far, for going out in Ennis?

Don't worry.....I'm fully aware that every single area on this island has good and bad people in it. the good certainly outweigh the bad in Clare. You are so lucky to have such beautiful areas down there. I don't think I could ever be put off.

    Really appreciate all the replies

If you were living in Cratloe, you'd be socialising in Limerick rather than Ennis.

Cratloe is a lovely part of the world. Quin, Sixmilebridge are also grand. Out around Rosslevan is nice in Ennis too... Nice place to live. If the airport picks up, then you are only a 20 minute drive away...

For commutes to work somewhere not far from the motorway/carriageway would be ideal, IMO ...... easy access to Shannon/Ennis/Limerick.

As mentioned look at Quin ..... Kilmurray, Sixmilebridge, Newmarket-on-Fergus ..... they are all a short distance from the motorway.
There are also some very nice family homes available in good areas in the Shannon area.

You did not say what your preference would be ...... a small housing estate, a rural house ...... other?
This might have a bigger bearing on the choice of location than anything else .......

The reason I haven't stated this is because we are still undecided. I'm quite nervous in the house on my own at night...even in a housing estate in Dublin. I'd love the thoughts of a detached house away from an estate - the privacy, the quietness....but fear I could go crazy with worry. Coming from an estate myself, I wonder could a detached house on its own be a very lonely place for children. I'm well aware that there are plenty of children who grew up perfectly happy out in the countryside too.

    It's a bit of a gamble really I suppose

I would recommend taking out short term lettings if possible in areas you might be interested in, that way if you don't like a place you can move again shortly after it and won't be stuck in a place you don't like, once you find the area you like you can go ahead and buy

+1 on that ........ and it gives you time to research while living in the general area ....... we all have different likes and needs so it is difficult to advise someone else, except to point to possible locations .....

It might help you better define what you would find acceptable too.

Good luck with your searching ;)

Enquiring for someone who is moving with kids who are likely intended for Flannan's about whether the nearby Tobarteascain area and smaller estates off it are holding peaceful and a good place to raise teenagers?

Think Tobertascain, may be prone to flooding after what happened there a few years ago. Open to correction there.

There a few estates out the Limerick Road (think one of them is the Hawthorns) and they seem nice and 10 min walk to Flannans. Houses around Cahercalla are grand too.

That would be Cahercalla Estate, Heights, Woodlands, Westside. Woodmills always seemed nice and detached.

    Definitely not Toberteascain ,,,

I don't think Toberteascain flooded, I think the river running under Flannan's burst it's banks and some of the houses on the Clare Road were flooded but I think further down was fine.

The Hawthorns (and The Brambles further in) is a lovely estate and is fairly new, across the road from it there's Westfields which is a bit older. Woodhaven seems to be very nice on the Kilrush Road, as does Rockmount a bit further out. It's a fairly huge life choice deciding where to live and imvho on you can make that decision, things that you like mightn't be for everyone, rent a place for a while and spend ages walking around different estates to get a feel for the different areas.

Thanks for the replies. I remember the road down to Tobartaoscain by Eddie Rockets was closed during the floods but don't know how far in the flooding went. Would be grateful for any more info on Tobartaoscain, the long road and the small estates off it. With distance and kids involved it is not easy for a family to scout the place out many times personally and renting first can be both a logistical and financial burden. Appreciate the need to avoid open negative comments which, unfortunately, can give entire area a bad name when only a few involved but I want to give my friends the best advice possible, so maybe send me a personal message if there are any more comments people can add. Thanks.

I know a few people living in Tobartaoscain and I've never heard them have a bad thing to say about the place, location wise it's very central without being overly busy. I would guess there's a fairly strong residents association down there as they blocked Tesco going in the first time, this would usually be a good indication of a high percentage of owner occupied homes which could mean less "annoying" neighbors.

It would also being a good side of town if you are going to be sending kids to The National School and Flannan's, the new primary school should be opening next year I think and is very easily accessible from that part of town.

I was living in Cahercalla until January when I moved to Tobartaoscain. There has been no flooding here although the main road did have issues last year for a short time during heavy rain as mentioned above, but no houses were effected.

No problems here so far, although we were told (by other people who did not live here) that this was not a nice area. We have been here for six months and it's been grand, no issues what so ever. There is one traveler family at the end of the estate, but to date there has never been once incident and we actually have met and spoke with many of our neighbors here and they are sound and tell us they also have never had any issues with the family in question and they have been here for years. I guess it's just the perception that people have that scares them away from here sure.

Can't beat Tobartaoscain though, the houses were all built in the late 90's, early 2000 and are nice, compared to the house in Cahercalla that was considerably older and much less heat efficient. We have a 3 bed / 3 bath semi detached with a nice back garden and is quite literally twice the size of our old house in Cahercalla and it is costing us €150 less a month. We never have to turn the heat on and all the appliances are new. Couldn't be more happier here.

If you're thinking of close to Flannans I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Springfield, College Green and College Grove - lovely mature estates with a good mix of people from new babies right up to retired couples and it's a 3 min walk to Flannans.

In relation to settling in a Village I'd tread carefully tried it myself but was a townie through and through. It can be quite difficult to gain acceptance in my experience unless you involve yourself in everything (especially church related) and even at that people living there in excess of 50 years would be considered blow ins. We would have still done some socialising in Ennis and it was a pain trying to get a taxi home (probably not as difficult now with the recession but Christmas can still be a nightmare - spent one night waiting on the street till 5am for a taxi home) - think plenty of drink and a 20 minute drive over bumpy roads :(

I would recommend the tulla rd, rosleven, there are a good few nice housing estates in this area, a 4 bed by me is selling for 180 in the boom it would have been the over 380, 3 beds are going for around 130 can get cheaper and your very close to the motorway to Shannon, Shannon is 15 mins away, you can choose from a few different schools, knockanean, barefeild, doors, (all country) or town schools CBS, holy family, educate together. All schools are within a 6 min drive. A 6 min drive to town centre a 4k walk to town centre.

No flooding in the higher estates, there was flooding into cappahard last year, but gort n blath, rather ban, lios ard, t-sean dun all good. There are a few other estates too. And a few county lanes do you don't feel like your stuck in town, estates are quite and kids play outside on the great areas.
