    Hi,
my girlfriend and I are planning a round the world trip beginning in January via Malaysia, SE Asia, China, Japan, and the US and have a couple of questions regarding flights.
Firstly, is it cheaper to fly Dublin to Bangkok or Singapore for the first leg of a round the world ticket?
Would people recommend we make our own way around Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Malaysia and keep the longer flights for booking with a tour operator?

    We've been quoted €2,100 for Dub-Singapore, Singapore-Bangkok, Bangkok, Tokyo, Tokyo-Hawaii, Hawaii-LA, NY-Dublin.
Although now we want to go to China but not sure if it'd be too expensive. Anyone think this looks expensive and know of a way to cut costs a little i.e. making our own way on some legs perhaps?

not sure how costs break down for all your trips but we got return flights to Bangkok for 670 return with Emirates.
There are also other airlines in a similar cost bracket, e.g. KLM and Etihad...

Hi, I'd fly into Singapore and get the train into mayalsia(do your touring around) train into thailand(touring round) bus into cambodia(touring again) head into Vietnam from the south head up the coast towards Hanoi. Flight back to Singapore at least your not back tracking any where. We did this 2 years ago it was really really great..... Only thing I would have loved to added on was from Hanoi onto hong kong by train and on up to Beijing. We've been to hong kong before and it's a fantastic city!!

Singapore very expensive 1-2days enough there, Malaysia is ok Capitol city KL is nice for a1-2 days pretty expensive, Thailand is as expensive or cheap it's up to you stay away from the really tourist centres and you'll find things cheaper, Bangkok is a right siht hole!! Cambodia is cheap cheap and I really liked the Capitol PP, Vietnam is dirt cheap again a fantastic country.

All the countries are very easy to get around by yourselfs and from Thailand on accommoadtion can be found cheap and the street food is just as good as the restaurants so.

Look up air Asia. You may be able to get some flights on there. The more legs you can cut from a rtw ticket the better. They're expensive. Look at regional airlines like that and then do the bare minimum with the rtw ticket.

I'd recommend not going anywhere near Singapore except for flight connections.. A boring sterile rape-your-wallet city. I have to fly there to setup a bank account in the next few months and I'm not looking forward to it in the slightest. If I can get away with not spending the night there, I'll be happy.

great, thanks for the responses. We're thinking of the great escapade ticket from virgin but not sure yet. have a rough itinerary and going to send that on to some agents to see what they come up with.
