Hello folks, just wondering if I could seek some help in here.

The old lad is hitting 60 next year, so a thought came into my head that we (myself, my brother and my mother) should take him to St. Andrews for obvious reasons. Four if us would be going over, three of us playing golf. Obviously we would have to stay overnight too.

While wanting to keep the cost non-astronomical (golf, accomm, travel, etc) I'm wondering what is the best way around this trip, be it travel company/package, or go-it-alone? Has anyone any experiences of a package deal that they would recommend. It'll be a surprise for him, just say we going to play a game of golf for his birthday then end up in Scotland. I think it would be better than tickets for the Open where he'd be stuck in massive crowds.

Also, we might take two cars driving over, so any experiences of this would be great too.

PM PhilipMarlowe, he has gone there a good bit.

My own experience was great, got my parents the winter package (three rounds over three days on three courses, inc. Old Course) for Christmas and it was fairly stress-free to organise. They had to play off fairway mats on the Old Course as it was in March they went but they didn't mind too much. As colmsix said, go to the St Andrews Links website and it should be fairly straightforward

Where abouts did you stay and how did you get there?

Cheers for the help so far.

Wasn't me, was the parents I got the gift for, they stayed at 1 Golf Place, which is right next to the course but there is loads of accommodation in St Andrews.

Got them flights to Edinburgh and they rented a car from there, not far to SA.
