    For emergencies when I'm stuck above the clouds, which happened to me recently.
    it would also be very handy when touring on the bike, gps just doesn't last a full day.
    Recommendations please!

    Get a proper compass. Anything else (which relies on batteries) is not a safety item.

    Might be worth looking at the list of mandatory kit for some of the IMRA races.
