I'm looking for general advice on buying a new TV and also choosing a TV service provider. I've no idea what I'm looking for.......................... terrestrial/satellite/cable etc...... I see separate threads for each of these so I am not sure where I should post to get this general view or should I post a separate query in each thread?

    Advice appreciated.

For the TV - what's your budget?

For the service - no matter where you live you can get the Irish channels with an aerial and pick up all the UK channels via Freesat (satellite dish) or if you're close to NI or living on the east coast, you may be able to get the UK channels using an aerial (Freeview). In all cases these channels are free forever.

It would be no harm to tell us roughly where you live and we can give you some guidance on what's possible using an aerial where you live.

If you install a Sky dish you can get all of the Irish and UK channels through the Sky box, this is a subscription service - http://www.sky.com/ireland

Or if you live in a town you may be able to get cable TV which is also a subscription service, see www.upc.ie

    Many thanks for reply.

Living now in Dalkey.....previous occupant had sky and there is a dish of sorts outside. Its a rental (hope to be here less than a year) so I am looking for something low cost and efficient rather than bells and whistles on both TV and stations. I would be happy with 4 Irish stations + BBCs, ITV, C4.........anything else is a bonus.

Budget for TV? I'll pay whatever I have to.................I was living previously where was massive TV on wall - not my thing really - so would be happy with something mid size.....no need for anything flashy or state of the art, but don't want something that's gonna be useless with all the changes (that I don't understand) coming down the road.

    Help appreciated.

Combi TV suggestion - Walker are launching a combi Saorview/satellite TV range the first week of August if you're willing to wait.

Samsung have a range of combi TVs on the market at the moment (UXXU models). They're flashy and state of the art though :D

What do you mean by "there is a dish of sorts outside"?

If you're going for a regular TV, a standalone freesat or free-to-air satellite receiver connected to the Sky dish should be ok.
