If you're planning on giving SWTOR a try, consider requesting a Free Trial Invite from one of us here (if you dont know someone else already playing).

This way you you'll be walked though setting up and downloading the game with the following benefits which you wouldnt have otherwise:
    • No Payment or credit card required
    • Play levels 1-15 with no time limit
    • After the trial, you can purchase the game and claim your trial characters - they'll be waiting for you!
Those of us who send you the invite get rewarded with a free mount if you sign up to the game.

    Disclaimer:

Although the opportunity of a free mount is the motivation behind this post, requesting a Free Trial from anyone here in no way obligates you to take it up or sign up to the game. It's just a Trial.

    Found this over on Tomshardware
EA today announced that SW:TOR would be going completely free-to-play up to level 50.

The game's subscription model hasn't been done away with. Instead, BioWare and EA are offering perks to subscription members, who will gain monthly grants of the game's new virtual currency, Cartel Coins, to spend on in-game items.

Free-to-play members will have certain content locked out that can be granted when they decide to purchase them with Cartel Coins. However, in order to grab all content, a paid subscription must be had.

Starting in August, SW:TOR will go on sale for $14.99, with a month's worth of complimentary subscription.

So... does this still work? I've got a bit of an mmporg itch to scratch and don't fancy going back to EVE, WoW or MUDs. Figured I'd give this a go. :)

I'm amused by this. IMO the best part of SWTOR is the levelling experience, which tbf is fantastic. The end game on the other hand is, again IMO, pretty poor.

It's like they're giving away the best bits for free and charging for the junk :P

    Hi folks,

I popped onto the official website last week and discovered the "free trial up to level 15" link. So, I downloaded, and installed it, and now I'm a level 11 Jedi Knight, lost somewhere on the streets of Coruscant!

I read some reviews yesterday, and I can definitely agree with a few points raised in them, namely the lack of a huge amount of interaction between players. Which is probably worse for me, as chat seems to be disabled in the version I've got. Plus, it's kind of annoying to walk back from a mission, expecting to see a free path, but instead seeing 25 enemies. Sometimes you just think; "aw man, not right now please!!".

That said, this is my first experience of an MMORPG, and I like the Star Wars story more than the fantasy elements of WoW, or Guild Wars, etc...

    So, here's my question;
I hear that this is going free-to-play in the near future.
Would I be able to carry this character into the free-to-play environment? Or would I have to start again?

I'm on Coruscant, but I haven't picked my class specialisation. A brief google tells me that that is done in the republic fleet, but when I go to Coruscant spaceport, I can't leave any more? Did I miss my chance?

    Thanks!!!

I got in on the F2P, but after a couple hours, I had had enough. Sad, cause I'm a big SW fan.

Some of the restrictions on the F2P model are ****in stupid. While i would consider coming back to play through some of the single player stories, there's no way i'd use it as an MMO anymore.

if you want to run more than three PvP warzone sessions a week, gain rewards for more than three flashpoints per week, have more than one crew skill or revive more than five times in the field, you’ll have to buy Cartel Coins. These can be spent on weekly passes to remove flashpoint and Operation restrictions, or you can blow them on new gear customisation options.

Once you’ve made a single purchase, your account will be upgraded to “preferred” status which will give you “the ability to run faster” by unlocking the sprint ability.

You’ll be limited to three Warzone PvP scraps per week and three space missions per week. You’ll also have to contend with a longer cooldown on quick travel, which can be lifted with a one-shot authorisation purchase. You won’t be able to equip powerful purple items without first buying a license with Cartel currency.

    *Sigh*

Every time I think BioWare/EA might finally be recognising how to actually make SWTOR a game which could carve out a reasonably popular, profitable, long-term niche for itself they disappoint. Same kind of decisions update after update which will whittle away at the remaining population until we're left with WAR 2.0.

Just checked my own account, apparently I'll have 2,500 of these coins (1,000 of them for having been stupid enough to buy a CE but I suppose I should be grateful we got something at all after what a scam that turned out to be) no idea how that'll break down post F2P.

There goes any possibility of me going back to the game.

More I hear about the F2P system the more of a bad joke it's sounding like. Some of the restrictions like no cargo hold or limited character creation options and character slots on top of the actual multiplayer restrictions is mindbogglingly stupid.

Surely with the original 2 million purchases and however many subs since the original game development and a good chunk of everything since must be paid for. Building an F2P system around cosmetics and paid account alterations (character slots, server transfers, character changes) would've give customers what they've actually been calling for since launch rather than the hamstrung mess we've been offered.

While I don't want to always automatically blame EA for all the woes of the game (certainly BioWare told their fair share of fibs), the fact that this is practically identical to what occurred with WAR...
