Summer 2012 - What We Watching?

As most of ye know, summer months means a much quieter TV schedule in the US so it's the perfect time to spent outside in our glorious Summer weather (L... O... L!). Alternatively, you could spend some time playing catch-up or watching TV gems you might have missed.

Apart from 'Breaking Bad' (tomorrow night kids!), not a whole lot of fresh TV programming this Summer has interested me. So my current catch-up list (seems to be growing each day):

    - Person Of Interest - watched the first 2 episodes last September and it didn't grab me but I've heard fantastic things about the first season. Only watched episode 3 before a few evening jobs started keeping me busy so planning on getting back to it this week.

    - Fringe (Season 4) - gave it mid-way through the season .. not so much "gave up" as I let it slip away from me. Think the last episode I remember was
    Nina abducting Olivia
    - was waiting to hear a renewal before I caught up so with the final season due to begin airing later in the year, gonna have to catch up.

    - The Newsroom - only watched the pilot (which I loved) so only 2 episodes behind. Have heard largely quite poor things about the 2 episodes since so that's a tad worrying.

    - South Park - this was a show that I adored in my youth. Then sometime after the amazing 'Bigger, Longer & Uncut', I either lost interest in the show or another one I let slip away. Watched the '6 Days To Air' documentary on Netflix and got a new found appreciation for Stone, Parker & the rest of the team at South Park Studios who write, storyboard, animate and voice an episode in just 6 days. Got probably 10 - 12 seasons to catch up on so I'll be busy.

    - Once Upon A Time - girlfriend will watch none of the above and she quite enjoyed this when we watched the first few episodes so we'll probably start watching that in the evenings once 'Masterchef Australia' finishes in 3 weeks time.

    - Boss - watched the first episode and thought it was... OK. Will give it another few episodes before I can comment more clearly but it's a brisk enough watch at just 7 episodes.

    - Continuum - watched the first episode of this and really liked it too. Half tempted to see if it gets a second season before continuing it though.

That's all I can think of right now - so what are the rest of ye watching? And are we enjoying it?

^Boss is excellent, it's griiping stuff watching Kelsey Grammer as Tom Kane, he won the Golden Globe for a reason!

Once Upon A Time is much better then expected, your GF will love it....not sure about yourself, you have to be into the Disney stuff, but it's pretty adult in parts too.

Your GF will really like Bunheads, and Awkward....maybe Teen Wolf as well. Falling Skies is good Summer fare as is Dallas.

Yeah.. but one good performance does not a great show make - that sounded less Shakespearean in my head! :D

Ahh.. I expected cheese from it when i started watching. Can take a bit of the syrupy sweet as long as some solid writing is there.

Watching Falling Sky's, cos the rest of family like it, me, I can take or leave it.
The Mentalist, summer fare but enjoyable late at night when half asleep.
Catching up on Justified, this is one of the best shows on TV.
Grimm and as thats finishing up will catch up on Once Upon a Time.

Not in the mood for any serious TV in summer, mostly movies and stuff I wouldn't give the time of day to in the longer nights.

Yep, wasn't a huge fan of season 3.. but the second season was just top-notch!

    Currently:

'Burn Notice': Enjoying Season 6. Arc isn't quite as strong as last year but the 'Oz'-like element is better than I'd thought it'd be.

'Continuum': Watched two episodes so far and better than I expected it to be. A third later on tonight.

'Damages': Promising opening episode last week.

'Futurama': Season 7 already providing a good few laughs.

'Happy Endings': Working through Season 1 right now. Better than I figured given some relatively weak reviews of its first season.

'New Girl': Pairing it with 'Happy Endings'. Schmidt's the standout so far.

'Newsroom': Liked the pilot and am about to watch the second episode.

    'Noein': Japanese animé. Quite strange.

'Person of Interest': Watched 12 episodes. Reasonable variety in the story lines, despite the somewhat absurd premise. Caviziel could lighten up his character a bit though - somewhat wooden.

'Strike Back': Only seen the pilot episode but wouldn't mind a bit of '24'-type action.

'Tron - Uprising': Solid entertainment and more "adult" than I'd have expected.

    'True Blood': Enjoyable nonsense.

'Wilfred': Seen the first three episodes. It can be a little bit "samey" but though the third episode was the funniest of the season so far.

True Blood is good but loosing the plot a bit, still enjoyable summer fare.
Watched all of Bedlam, God it's atrocious rubbish but so bad you watch it anyway.

Watched the first episode of this years ago and found it blah... never caught up despite hearing great things. Maybe one for Summer 2013.

Another show I lost track of.. absolutely loved it's first season. Have the first two seasons on DVD on the shelf still wrapped actually - got them both for £5 online back in early 2010. Heard whispers this is the final season so might wait til it's finished up.
    ixoy wrote: »

Didn't catch one episode since it came back / was revived. Never watched any of the movies either actually!

The first season started off average but improved as it went on.. the second season is superb though. You'll find it hard to get a better ensemble comedy cast IMO.
    ixoy wrote: »

He'll remain the standout too.. although Nick gets some fantastic moments in the second half of the season.

Watched the one whole of the first season but girlfriend tired of it.. so haven't had a chance to start the second season yet. I had a problem with it remaining "samey" too - although loved the episode in the latter half of season 1 with Ed Helms.
    tommy2bad wrote: »

Heard mixed things about it.. and then I saw both Will Young and Lacey Turner starred.. so no, I don't think I could sit through it.

Falling Skies, Continuum, True Blood & Suits.

I got the Sons of Anarchy boxsets so I'm watching them now, never seen them before. About midway through season 3, it's such a great show.

Started watching Suits a few weeks back.. and while I kinda enjoyed it, I didn't hugely understand the acclaim behind it. Not caught up on season 2.

Yeah.. I heard great things about it and found myself hugely bored while watching the first few episodes. Might be another one I need to stick with though!

Just Breaking Bad and Futurama for me. Oh, and Seinfeld on Sky Atlantic. Might finally get around to V (original) or The West Wing box sets if I'm stuck for something to watch.

It's solid enough. Kelsey Grammar is an amazing actor, with an amazing range... He will always be typecast for me, so I do find it a bit harder not to see him as Frasier in every episode, but he plays the part well.

Just watched the opening season of The Killing. Also quite entertaining, if not populated with a few too many stock hollywood characters.... I mean does ANY Hollywood detective have a good relationship with their kids?

Season 2 is a lot less episodic than season 1. As for SOA, I think it takes 3 or 4 episodes to get into it and understand who's who.

Dallas a guilty pleasure and still hugely enjoyable

Leverage, White Collar, Burn Notice and True Blood essential summer viewing for me, harmless fun ;)

I am quite enjoying Common Law and The Newsroom

I finally managed to watch Lost Girl and Leverage. Quite liked them both and I'm looking forward to Leverage season 5 (Monday!). This summer I'm watching Suits, Covert Affairs, Common Law, Continuum, Awkward, Jane by Design, Pretty Little Liars and Bunheads. gave up on Teen Wolf, will definitely be watching Breaking Bad.

It's the final season of 'Damages' and they've gone into the season knowing that so it's being set up nicely for an ending. Enjoyed all the seasons so far and the network jump didn't harm the show at all.
Ready to give up on it now.. absolutely horrid this year!
You're a tough customer! I see it as fun trash. You were also tough on 'Supernatural' this year (admittedly one of its weakest seasons) so you may not be dissuaded.

True Blood was always "fun trash" but it was always "watchable fun trash".. although I lost a lot in faith in it last season with the woeful Marnie character - and this season isn't looking much better!
    ixoy wrote: »

Supernatural was quite weak very early last year (season 6) but it got back on track a few episodes in but couldn't stick with it at all this year.

I do agree I can be quite harsh on TV shows but I do give everything a fair shot.

I sometimes suffer from what I'm calling "Smallville Syndrome" - a show you know is poor, a waste of your time, one you mostly bitch about, but you keep watching it because you've watched it for years and you're damn well seeing it to the end even if it seems like the bloody thing will never end.

and re-watching Greys Anatomy season one and two. :)

Damn, was about to type a smug message about being up late enough to see Breaking Bad before I go to bed but just before I pressed tab, tab, spacebar I realised this is Sunday morning, not Sunday night.

But whatever, another 24 hours will be no harm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4 Sarcasm Much?

True Blood - I reckon this season will be much better than last, sure it can't get much bloody worse.

Other than that I don't think there is much else going on. There are a few series that I haven't watched yet so I might give them a go (Dexter, Vampire Diaries and maybe Revenge)

Oh, and don't forget Geordie Shore! (it's my guilty pleasure :o)

It's a quiet summer TV wise.

I have a lot of catching up to do over the coming weeks, missed 6 weeks worth of shows due to my grandmother being seriously ill and then her funeral. When watching shows such as Suits and Franklin and Bash weekly you don't really notice just how much time you spend watching a show but when you have 5 or 6 episodes of a show to watch you suddenly find yourself wondering if it's worth the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,572 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I just started Boss, and I'm blown away. I remember reading reviews (here) last year when it originally aired and they said it wasn't great. Then I saw it popping up in the TV Awards a few weeks ago and decided to add it into my playlist. Moral of the story - if I like the sound of a show, ignore reviews and check it out for myself. :o

Also watching usual summer shows - Burn Notice, Suits, Covert Affairs, White Collar, Breaking Bad (roll on tomorrow!), Dallas and Falling Skies. Looking forward to Alphas, Leverage and Warehouse 13, all coming up in the next couple of weeks.

In reality TV, I'm watching Big Brother USA, The Glass House (not great but watchable), Masterchef (AU and USA) and Hells Kitchen.

Only show I'm really watching that's airing at the minute is The Newsroom. Was meant to have caught up on Breaking Bad by the time season 5 started but I don't think that will happen now :p Hopefully by the end of it I will be though.

Have Boss and Homeland ready to go, looking forward to them both! And think I'm going to finish The Tudors (a few eps of season 4 left that I've been meaning to watch since like last year) and possibly a Veronica Mars rewatch.

They're only showing 8 episodes in this run, then taking a break till summer '13. You're good for time. Kind of annoying, that year wait. I tend to prefer waiting till a season is done before starting to watch something, not really a fan of the week to week. I'm going to wait till the 8 are done, then put up with the long wait like everyone else.

I do have some stuff to keep me going a while. Haven't started watching the latest season (also finale) of Eureka, so I'll get to that. I watched the first ep of New Girl which I thought was quite good, so I'll go on with that. I might get started on Mad Men. Have seasons 1 - 3 on DVD ages but never even started on it.

I see people go on about It's always sunny in Philadelphia. Might watch that while waiting for other stuff to end.

In terms of what stuff is on my to watch and as they'll be done, Line of Duty, Longmire, Continuum, Falling Skies and The Newsroom. Though I see people say bad things about Falling Skies so I may keep that till such time as things look bad.

Too many shows, seriously. I have watched a lot of 'em but there are still so many that I haven't seen. Still haven't started Grimm or The Borgias in terms of ones that are still on the air. In terms of off the air, haven't watched The West Wing, for instance which at times I'm inclined to do.

This isn't the films forum but the amount of TV stuff I watch makes watching the films I buy on DVD a rarity. I still see something I want for cheap, buy it, and don't get to watching it. First world problems :pac:

.. yet I'd scour my media drive or Netflix to watch something ahead of actually opening one of them! :D

Myself and the OH started watching The Good Wife on UPC On demand. It's a cracking show. Nearly finished the first series.

Then we'll be onto 30 Rock which we've never watched any of but it looks funny enough.

I seen today that Arrested Development Series 4 is currently in development. I never finished series 2 or seen any of series 3 so will get back to them when I have a minute. I loved the show but OH didn't so it got sidetracked.

They certainly do. Very annoying when you get a show you like and the OH doesn't. I've had it with Arrested Development, Breaking Bad and Boardwalk Empire over the last while. And all the while she watches the biggest pile of shít TV ever - every soap, Geordie shore, blah blah blah.....

Watched the first 2 - 3 episodes and while it had some great lines..
Tessa Altman: If you could have dinner with any famous person, living or dead, who would it be?
    Ryan Shay: Scarlett Johansson... Dead.

It really does pick up and doesnt stop momentum-wise until S3. S2 has one of the greatest opening episodes you will ever see, Peg Bundy should have won ever 'best' award for that episode and the following few.

I've a few oldies I'm catchin up on:

It's Always Sunny..... I've blasted through 5 seasons of this in the past few weeks. It just really reminds me of my time in college, althought that was Dundalk, not Philly.....but all the time spent in a bar and the crazy concepts fit perfectly.

Six Feet Under - Blazed through the first 3 episodes of S1 last night and am itching for more.

Justified - Ready and waiting to watch

Party Down - Dont know much about it, just got a recommend so have 2 seasons to smash.

Of the current crop, I'm watching NYC22, Wilfred, Workaholics and Louie. Also a new episode of Breaking Bad to watch....so quite the busy summer for me!

    ^ Party Down is great!

I forgot to put Dallas in my list. I'm a few episodes behind though. Think I'm going to start watching The Wire again in the next few weeks too. Watched season 1 last year and loved it, but got distracted with other stuff so never got back to it.

I got up early this morning and banged on an episode of Party Down to check it out. I ended up being late for work because I got stuck in and watch 3 episodes!

I had another run through the Wire last year and stopped at the start of S4....so that's another one I have to resume.

S1 and S2,I liked; by season 3 I wanted to slap the lot of 'em. Get over yourselves already. An artifact of it's time I think. Then again the best TV often is.

    Brenda remained a pain-in-the-arse throughout..

.. but didn't have a problem with the rest of them.

Not too gone on the new episodes of Futurama. None that are standing out as absolute classics for me. Damages is back for a final season and already hooked on it. Caught up on it last September so first time watching it week-by-week. Considering letting it stockpile and going through it in one go.

Continuum is looking very promising, bit cliched in parts but still good. Also watching True Blood. Hopefully it stays on course with just the main plot. The amount of sideplots is getting annoying and just makes me want to kill off about 3/4 of the cast.

Also started watching season 1 of Community based on the recommendation of my housemate. Can't believe it's taken me this long to watch it. Senor Chang is just comedy gold.

just finishing up on a Once Upon A Time marathon today actually, decent show. Not exactly The Wire but kept me interested.

Aafter that I'm on to Happy Endings, I need to check it out to see how worried I should be for Community. I liked the pilot though so that's a good sign...

I just noticed Suburgatory is starting on E4. It looks interesting, has anyone seen it?

Yes it's great and it has been given a second season
