Somebody has to pay for the treatment. Are you expecting the dentist to?

    Ah.
The medical card now only covers 2 fillings/year& any amount of extractions. It's worth lobbying your local TD to voice your dissatisfaction, the government will take more notice of patients than they will of dentists.
Meantime, talk to your dentist about your options, there may be a less costly interim solution such as a temporary crown.

Ill get onto my local TD so cant see him doing anything worth a try anyhow. As for a temporary crown id much rather get a permanent job if i am spending the money on it getting a second quote next week, ill post back and see what happens.

no it isn't.sorry dianthus, i know you're just re-gurgitating the party line on this one but there's zero chance of the hse providing a crown @ 500-800 for op when they dont cover teenagers to have basic fillings done.

op, what'll happen is the td will get his staffer to make a few calls.the hse will give him a pfo. he'll tell you, empathise with you and keep you onside to give him/her your no. 1 at the next election. bottom line is you'll be no better off.

best thing you can do is save up a few quid, pick your dentist and get the thing done when you can afford it.most dentists will do the prep and fit a temporary when you pay half the fee. that'll keep you going till you save up the balance.

does your dentist brush your teeth at at least twice daily, and watch what you eat? otherwise how the fook can they be held responsible for your tooth rotting away. it's your problem, and yours only.

It certainly won't get the OP his crown, of course, but it might help somewhat towards putting dental health back on the list of priorities for the future.

Sorry to hear op but 'they (the government)' don't give a hoot about you and your crown. Your dentist probably does but is a private business and can't work for free so as already said, save or ask a family member, a filling or temporary crown may do you in the meantime.....

Sorry OP about the problem, however the medical card only cover essential dental treatment. We live in a country and health system with limited resources, as such these resources have to be spread over treatments that will do the most benefit for the most patients.

Your crown is a cosmetic issue, having a gap will not mean you starve to death of get a major infection. As a dentist I think that not have gaps like a hill-billy is important but the "government" or tax payer does not. The cost of giving you a new crown could treat 10-12 other people with more painful or urgent issues. Harsh yes, but the way of the world.

You can try the dental hospital in Dublin or cork they provide advanced treatments on the medical card, however the wait is long.
