Customs on returned item

    Hi,

I purchased an item from the USA valued at 160 and just received a bill for 71 euro from customs. The problem is I am returning the item to the USA and getting a refund as it was not what I ordered. What is happens with the customs charge as a result? Do I still have to pay the tax even though I won't have the item?

    Thanks for any help/advice.

I'm not 100% sure on this but if the item was in customs and taken out by you or a courier then you have to pay the VAT, if it's still at the customs then you shouldn't have to.

was it delivered by courier or post? have you already paid the VAT? usually you need to provide proof of export (tracking number etc) and you can then request a refund if you have you already paid the VAT.
