About the Second Year Visa

My question is: my first year visa is up the end of August, have the second year visa granted, once the first year is up does the second year automatically start then? I'll be staying in Oz and do i have to do anything to activiate the second year? Cheers.

How long do you have to use the second year visa once the first year of your visa has expired?
