Replacing Stolen Toyota Keys

Hi all. Just wondering if anyone could give me a ballpark figure on how much it'll cost to replace a 06 Yaris and 07 Corolla main key?

Our bags were stolen on holiday and the keys were in the bag. I'm hoping travel insurance will cover it but I'll need to get the keys ordered anyway. Such hassle!

    Thanks!

An avensis key is mad money, about three hundred. Do you currently have any keys for the cars?

Yeah we have a second bunch of keys that had a key to each car on it.

I reckon a locksmith could do both remote keys a lot cheaper, the ones from the dealer would be big enough money.

Hopefully your travel insurance will cover it.

Would those keys start the cars though?

Replacement car keys should be covered under your car insurance policy.
Read your policy. Something along the lines that if you feel that the keys stolen could lead to your car been stolen, the insurance company will replace. Unsure if it affects your no claims. Ring and ask.

You can programme the avensis key yourself I think.

I programmed a key for my celica by dancing on the pedals, doing a strange dance with the door and turing the ignition on and off a few times.

I rang Aviva to ask them if I was covered for the cost of replacement keys. Its odd.. Her point was that someone in Spain has them so I'm not covered for the cost of replacement of the keys.. Basically that the risk of someone flying over here and robbing the car with the keys is negligible.

I tried my best to just say.. What about the cost of replacing the keys.. Regardless of where or how they were lost.

She kept referring back to them being lost in Spain so I'm not covered.

I don't understand it.. Surely the keys are part of the car and say like if I damaged a wheel or something I could claim for the damage.

Tell them you dont know where the bag was lost/stolen, ie. Ireland or Spain, but I guess you already have told them that info....
Anyway, seems like a cop out to me.

Wouldn't say it's a cop out. If you read your policy it will explain it to you.
For my policy it is very clear, the will only cover new keys if your stolen keys increases the risk of your car been stolen.

As you have explained, your keys were stolen in Spain and in the eyes of the insurer, there is no risk of the thief flying over to Ireland, tracking down your car and stealing it. There is no risk and hence, they will not cover for new keys.

There is "no" risk or very little risk? If the thief was Irish? How would the risk factor change?
It is a cop out by the Insurance company in the sense that the client has to pay for a thief of their keys, whether it was abroad or at home, the user still pays - even though they have insurance. yes, I can appreciate that it is well documented on the policy. I don't think that makes it right though.

If the thief was in Ireland and you had grounds to show that the thief knows the location of the car, then key replacement would be covered. For example, some people have their car reg on their keys, giving the thief added benefit of finding the car.
Here insurance would cover replacement as there is higher probability that the car will be stolen and the insurance company would lose more money.

In terms of why they just won't replace stolen keys, I'm not sure.
If a wheel was stolen, do they pay out?

I need to read the policy fully when I'm home. However I've told the insurance company that the keys were stolen and that there was a car hire document with the home address on it in the bag. It's for them to decide whether they're happy with that risk. They are, so I'm happy there.

Its the actual cost of replacing the keys that's annoying me. She kept referring back to the low risk of someone stealing the car but I was trying to find out whether they'd just replace the keys on the basis that they're simply gone and I need to pay for it.

I would imagine that the wouldn't just replace stolen keys (here) because of further theft leading to a double payout as you mentioned. I'd say that they would insist on a new key and chip done by the main dealer.
If they stole a wheel, well isn't there a certain amount you have to pay out first on most policy's ? Excess or something....Sorry I don't have correct terminology. Anyway, I would imagine that if you claimed for a wheel (expensive Alloy) you would have to pay x amount first or up front. Depends on what you had covered in the policy.
