Hi have not been able to get back to repairing my PC until now, as suggested, I have tried to assign a letter to my External Hard Drive in Computer Management and under Disk Management, the first column in the Disk Management tab it says under Volume ‘C’ and then under ‘Layout’ it say ‘Partition’ and under ‘Type’ it say ‘Basic; and then under ‘File System’ it says ‘NTFS’ and then under ‘Status’ it says ‘Healthy System’.

The external hard drive has the same but for ‘File System’ it says ‘FAT32’ and healthy active.

When it assign the letter to the External Drive it seems to assign OK but when I turn off computer the letter disappears and is not assigned and I cannot access the External Hard Drive.

Should I format the external hard drive, it give me that option as well.

Hope this makes sense and any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

if theres no data on it,format it in ntfs,
    http://www.ehow.com/how_4881911_partition-external-hard-drive.html
if the drive is over 1000 gb,
    maybe make 2 900gb partitions ,
ie your os or pc bios,
may not see partitions over 1 terabyte.
winxp 32bit has 2 terabyte partition limit.
    what os are you using.
    How old is the pc.
ie format drive ,make take 15minutes,
    format first then partition,drive.
you may need to make partition active.
after all this is done ,exit, disk management, click my computer,
drive should show up as ,drive,e or f.1st partition drive ,e.
    in winxp, make partition,
    1500 gig max.

Say drive is 2 tb, make 3 partitions,
    700gig,700, 599 gig .
    or 1tb, drive, 1 700, 1 299 partition.
Some bios , s have a limit on drive partition size they can acess.
BIOS is a pc hardware software on rom that acts as an interface between hardware, pc,chipset and the installed os, eg winxp, or linux.
