Upgrading MTB bike???

Right so I started mountain biking about 1.5 years ago and I bought a carrera vulcan to get started. I thought it was a great bike but sold it after maybe 5 months to get a full sus but in the end never got around to buying it as I just went away from biking for awhile. Now im back into it and iv bought another carrera vulcan as its an amazing bike for under 500 quid. Now I upgraded the tyres on it and the peddles but tonight in ballinastoe one of my cranks broke after I made a jump. No big deal its a cheap enough fix but im now thinking I need to upgrade the bike. It was grand to get started again but this time im starting to get into the scene alot more and feel the bike is just holding me back.

What would you guys recommend? Should I maybe just upgrade the front suspension maybe and fix the peg that broke or should I start looking at upgrading the bike altogether? Iv only had it for maybe 4-5 months again I might add.

What do you mean by 'peg' are you using BMX style pegs on your mountain bike?
