Recommendations for External Hard Drive for Recording?

    Hi folks,

I was wondering if anyone could give me a recommendation for a decent mid-range external hard drive for recording. My set-up is pro tools on a mac - I'm not doing anything particularly demanding.

I have an AVASTOR HDX, which is great but probably a bit pricy for my requirements. I was hoping that there would something a little cheaper that would do the job.

I've seen people mention Western Digital & Lacie but my impression of them is not good (certainly not WD in my experience).

    Thanks.

If you are not doing much demanding work go for at least Firewire400 or at the top end eSata connectivity.

I ran a Lacie for a couple of years without a hitch, d2 Quadra to be exact. I then swapped out its drive for a 1TB Western Digital and I have ran that for a couple of years too with no hitch.

I run 4 laptop Western Digi harddrives so I dont know if the claim that WD or Lacie are bad is true.

Make sure you have a 7200rpm. You can go higher, but you say your demands are not major.

Its a simple setup really, firewire or estata and 7200 rpm. Boom.

LaCie user here, can report no issues after 2 years (touch wood)

Don't think I'd ever fully trust any HD but LaCie and WD are decent. You'd wanna be looking at backups regardless.

Fair enough, I'm probably being too cautious about the WD and Lacie drives (and not being careful enough by backing stuff up anyway!).

    Thanks

Have the Mini, ideal for recording on the go when you're trying to minimise the weight/volume of gear your carrying...
