I found the default auto-brightness option to be complete arse. So found this nifty little app. "Lux Auto Brightness". Its overrides the default matching screen-brightness % to lux levels from the light sensor.
Its a free one and paid has some extras. Ive already gone and calibrated so here are some setting you might want to try. Drop the file lux_profiles.lux into .........<computer>\GT-I9300\Phone\Lux\

Recommand go to settings -> general -> automatic mode = adjust periodically

The latest firmware update for the SGS3 introduces a brightness slider in the notification menu. I never leave it (or any other android phone I've had) on auto, I always set it manually to as low as I could bear. I've always went to the market and got a widget for my homescreen, but newer ICS Android has sliders. The display is always the worst battery killer.

This can be set to give auto control to your desired taste level bright or weak. That slider option will be welome though.
