Advice for Nordie

Hey guys was hoping someone could give me some advice.

Essentially the craic is I moved down a few months back as my GF got a good job here and I attend school that isn't available up north. I have been living on savings for a while whilst applying for a job but naturally this can't go on forever. Considering I'm from Northern Ireland is it possible to sign on until I find work? I'm a graduate and have applied for around 300 jobs since being here and had little response and its more than disheartening! I'm unable to work nights or weekends due to study commitment (best time to retrain I guess) which limits my options.

I'm aware of habitual residence etc but was wondering has anyone any anecdotal or actual up to date advice is on the situation. I actually went in to the office once but, and no joke, a guy dropped a can of druids on my bag and I had to leave haha. I'm also a dual passport holder so technically...yeah.

Any advice especially those working benefits would be great or any stories you have.

    Great forum this btw, cheers

    T

You need to apply for JSA

However you can be regarded as not being available for work and therefore not entitled to Jobseeker's Allowance if you put unreasonable restrictions on the following:
    • The nature of the employment
    • The hours of work
    • The rate of pay
    • The duration of the employment
    • The location of the employment
If a Deciding Officer thinks that that you have placed unreasonable restrictions, you will be interviewed and given the opportunity to respond. Note that if you refuse a suitable offer of work you can be disqualified from Jobseeker’s Allowance.

Thanks mp. I'd be pretty confident that only considering work from 8-6 whilst I retrain at my own expense in something guaranteed to improve my prospects immeasurably would be okay. Sometimes Bureacracies can differ though!

I've never really taken any benefits on before, and without wishing to sound a bad egg the office I went too wasn't exactly packed with dubliners. Many nationalities and many stories. I was hoping for any comments concerning being from the North. If I live here, prove my life is here etc I would have thought the commitment to studying here also would improve and not hurt Habitual Residence consideration!

Thanks again for the info and the link Sir!
