Hi all, thinking of getting into the saddle so need to purchase a mans bike and child seat to do approx 10km / day. Don't initially want to spend too much as my circumstances may change and it could well end up gathering cobwebs in the shed but I do want something reliable. I may even look for 2nd hand but what should I be looking for?, I'm a complete novice!! Can anybody shed any light please?, it would be most appreciated.

I'd tend to go for a hybrid with wider tyres (e.g. 32c) and a solid fork (e.g. no suspension). Something like a Giant Escape 3 is a good workhorse that you'll find in many bike shops. Pick it up to make sure it doesn't weigh a ton, and give it a trial ride to make sure it suits you. Avoid dinky cheapo mountain bikes (e.g. sub €300) like the plague, basically the less moving parts and attachments the better on lower cost bikes.

Plenty of 2nd hand bikes like this on the market, makes such as Dawes, Giant, and Raleigh tend to make reliable bikes across their range. If you're buying 2nd hand, bring someone with you who knows about bikes to have a look at it. €200 should get you something serviceable and reliable, though there's plenty of crap out there too.

Thank you smacl. If I wanted to buy a new bike would I be entitled to any discount from the cycle to work scheme?

Should be, though haven't availed of it myself. Detailed discussion here; http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056382170#
