    In a word - secondhand.

A new racer for 500 will not be great but if that's what you want, then Halfords have some Carerra racers for that money - e.g. Carrera TDF.

I have this for about a year now http://www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_11101_catalogId_15551_productId_810601_langId_-1_categoryId_212536

I know some people here give out about Halfords/Carrera but this is a decent entry level road bike for the money and has done me no wrong over the year, a lot seems to depend on your local Halfords store and the staff, the lads in my local store both cycle competitively so the bike servicing and assembly is good.

I also asked for discount when I was buying and got 10% off so that could be worth a try..
