Yes, look for the chipset and usb drivers (if seperate) and install them. Those dongles appear as a usb drive with an installer exe which you launch and then it installs the driver. Have you tried a USB Key and does it work?
Also are you sure the laptop will take windows xp? Many Windows 7 machines may not have proper support for XP at all, and possibly even no equivelant XP drivers available

How does the dongle show up in device manager?
What kind of dongle is it?
Is it detected properly in the application?

Normally these things will show up as several devices (a USB drive and a modem at least).

When the light on the dongle is flashing it just means that the dongle itself has a signal, no guarantee it's actually talking to the computer.

SMBus is part of the Intel chipset driver. Network Controller is the Wi-Fi adapter and the Ethernet Controller is the wired LAN card. I'm guessing you're using a 3G USB dongle? What Inspiron is it, exactly?

    Inspiron 15 (M5010)

i managed to download some xp 64bit drivers

the only ? in device manager is 'network controller'

the usb 3pay 3g dongle is recognised and the software installed

but says 'no network'(no problems on pc right beside laptop,so dongle and coverage are ok)

usb seems to be working fine

is that because of the network controller?

The Network Controller is your Wi-Fi adapter, so it shouldn't be a problem. Did you install XP64 on the laptop? If so, that might explain why the 3G modem doesn't work - a lot of devices don't have XP64 drivers.

The M5010 I think is an AMD based laptop so getting drivers might be more tricky.

yes xp 64 ,would that be why the 3g modem doesn't work?

is there any way round that?

Double-click the Network Controller and go to the Details tab. You should see something like this:

    PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002D&SUBSYS_0300168C&REV_01

Post that here and I can tell you what driver it needs. The 3G modem might be tricky though, it depends on whether the manufacturer has XP64 drivers available or not.

Do yourself a favor and ditch XP 64bit, its rubbish and afaik has reached end of support from Microsoft. XP 64bit was developed using the server '03 code and support for that especially for consumer devices is very poor. Stick to XP 32bit or even better Windows 7 64bit

It isn't end of life per se, still supported with security updates until 14th July 2015 (so exactly 3 years from now) but it was never fully supported by vendors as it was more of a proof of concept OS.

There may be no other way to get the 3G modem working, it's probably 64-bit Vista at least.

i got the modem drivers off huawei-it's working now

    the network controller is PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4727&SUBSYS_00131028&REV_01\4&C4C8321&0&0020

also audio device on HD audio bus
    HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_111D&DEV_7605&SUBSYS_10280448&REV_1001\4&384A8D32&0&0001

Sound driver: http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/in/en/DriversDownloads/Drivers_Show_2459.html (I know it's a Lenovo driver but it should work - it has the correct PCI ID)

Wi-Fi: http://downloads.dell.com/network/R287498.exe (this is a maybe - the driver is listed as Windows Vista/7 but it has version 5.2 in the WHQL catalogue)

Yeah it can be. Wouldn't be my first choice of OS.

The problem with XP 64bit is that no companies embraced it like Vista/7 so support for it was always limited from day one. You'd be better with vista 64bit tbh and thats saying something. XP 32bit is ok, but nowadays if the machine came with Windows 7 that is better and more secure. You can easily download the 64bit iso (if the machine shipped with the 32bit version) here and it should activate with the serial on the bottom of the laptop.
