Hi, I was wondering where I should start looking for courses and qualifications in computer sciences.

I'm reading a lot of these threads and some of it may as well be in German for all the good it does me :P

So I was thinking it might be a good career change for me, I do like the idea of learning, and I'm still relatively young enough to begin a new career (33) but I don't know exactly where to start from.

All I really hold is the ECDL, and that's not really doing me any favours at the moment, so I was thinking of learning a new skill, so I was hoping someone here might know of a course starting soon, or who to ask or just where to get started.

    Thanks in advance

    Vince

Comptia's A+ is a good all round knowledge base. Should be challenging for someone new to the area but it gives a great wide overview of many areas. Not overly expensive if you get an online course plus a book.

To get jobs in the area you'd need a bit more.

Computer Science is very different from Computer Engineering which again isn't really a Mr Fixit type job.

If you want to get some hands on experience try and learn the basics and then volunteer at Camara if you're Dublin based.

Is there a link to volunteering? And what's the minimum age?

I just showed up when it was based in Dublin 8. You need a pair of steel toe caped boots for H&S reasons.

I'm not sure about min age - you can email them IIRC. They had students there but they might have been insured though the college or what not.

Its very basic - bits in boxes and a lot of repetitive work on 2 and 3 year old Dells but they have a bit of craic. There's not much software work as they just blast the machines with Ubuntu.
