    hi all.

I normally reside over on the motors section but here goes for my first diy post.

currently renovating a house that has been idle for nearly 2 years and while there's lots of cleaning going on there is a question mark over how best to test the heating system ( oil fired ) without the risk of leaks ( i believe that gun metal pipes have been used ) so that we can proceed with painting etc ?

Can the system be tested initially without having to have the burner on ( and if so how ) or must the burner be on at all times ?

look forward to any idea's you may have

    brendan

Is there water in the system at present ?? if so thats a good sign, check the expansion tank isnt still putting water into the tank, even dripping, if its not thats a better sign, but now you need to heat test in order that the system can expand, no leaks then then crack on.

    hi

thanks for that. There is water in the system and i will check tonight that there is no dripping into the expansion tank and will then fire it up.

    thanks again

As it's been standing for 2 years, a boiler service would be in order, and make sure to check the circulating pump is working once the system is switched on (could have seized)

I would tie up the ball cock in the feed & expansion tank, mark the water level and leave stand for a few days. If there is a drop in level, there is a leak.

Attics are warm this time of year so some evaporation would take place in the f&e tank.
