At any rate, Deus Ex‘s film rights have officially fallen into the hands of CBS Films, and Human Revolution – not the original or Invisible War – will be its foundation.

Anyway, Roy Lee and Adrian Askarieh are producing, with Askarieh having also put his stamp on the not-exactly-great Hitman movie from a few years ago. Currently, he’s got adaptations of Just Cause and Kane & Lynch in the works as well. This bit, however, does at least offer some hope: ”No one knows ‘Human Revolution’ like the team that created it, and we look forward to working with them from day one to make a film adaptation worthy of the ‘Deus Ex’ name.”

Meanwhile, the film’s so-general-that-it-doesn’t-really-tell-us-anything description does at least seem to be on the right track:

“Film will follow an ex-SWAT security specialist who must learn to embrace the high-tech prostheses that replace much of his body in order to unravel a global conspiracy that involves an attack on a biotechnology firm tied to developing human enhancements.”

But that may as well be Human Revolution’s at-a-glance Wikipedia description, so who knows where the movie might end up once it gets off the ground?

It's pretty much guaranteed to be awful.

Is Askarieh like Uwe Bolle's successor?

he's not THAT bad, nobody but Boll is that bad

For once I would like to see proper directors making movie adaptations of video games. Some of them, like the Mass Effect series, have such epic possibilities for big blockbusters!

Has there ever been a good movie based on a video game?

The manga? Yeah that was brilliant. Great soundtrack too.

Anyway back on topic...I also have a feeling that this will be terrible. I think it's a case of please just let it be and not try to milk the name by needlessly turning it in to a movie. Although if it's done well then I'll eat my words.

The Assassins Creed film apparently has Michael Fassbender in it. Hopefully that won't suck.

I actually thought the first Resident Evil film was very good, as a stand alone movie. I don't really know a whole lot about the actual Resident Evil storyline and I know a lot of fans have criticised the movie because it didn't follow the story but the story that was there was actually good.

The second and third ones weren't quite as good, but were still very watchable. The 4th one though is possibly the worst film I have ever seen....

The Assassin's Creed movie excites me because of Fassbender, but also because of their refusal to hand over their IP to a movie company that would just distort their vision. At least it's an attempt at doing something different, instead of continuously rolling out ****e like Tomb Raider (how the hell did that get a sequel?) or Doom.

    ...or Doom.

I know I'm going to be alone on this one...I actually liked DooM! :o

I actually meant the Van Damme film although that one was brilliant as well. One of the few films where the dubbed version was better. That soundtrack was amazing.

I'd say it will be good assuming that they spend some money on it. The main problem with most game based films is that they seem to cheap out on everything.

There's also the issue with them trying too hard to stick everything from the games into the film. This is also problem with comic book films, Judge Dredd was a great example of trying to fit too much into appease the fans.

Nolan showed how you can take a character/series and make a film around it rather then making glorified fan fiction. A lot of fans will complain about it but assuming you get the essence of the character/story right then you will get away it.

I got to say I quite enjoyed the Hitman film. Wasn't exactly a replica of the game but it was an enjoyable film and there were enough little touches that made me go ooh to keep me happy.

Deus - Ex the original would make an amazing HBO type series or a movie! But I assume this will disappoint.

Oh dear, am I the only one who enjoyed Human Evolution? I know I might get flayed for this but I much preferred HR's story to the original's. I think that the ethical viewpoint was well done and could make for a decent film plot.

I much preferred the newest incarnation too.

I stand beside you. It actually was a pretty good homage to Doom, when you think about it. It was never going to be a super serious movie, because Doom was far from a super serious game. It was good fun, brainless and thoroughly enjoyable.

O/T: Sorry, but there was nothing in the Stallone Dredd film to appease fans.

And on-topic: Meh, the original DeusEx was great but there's nothing there that would merit an adaptation, really (not that there is in Assassin's Creed, but that's got Michael ****ing Brilliant Fassbender going for it.) Games draw too much from films as it is, so it just feels like a copy of a copy of a copy when Hollywood in turn adapts them.

Or free with PS+ this month. Asfor this one, I'd much prefer a cg adaptation to the same quality as the extended Icarus trailer, for 3 reasons, 1: that trailer is frickin amazing, B: you could use the original cast, and trois: no limitations.

I think stuff like going the whole bit in the wasteland and the Angel family was there in order to try and please fans. I'm not saying it worked but I always thought that was the studios intention. I was surprised Judge Death wasn't there. Had they just focused on Rico and Dredd, it might have been a better film.

If they try to keep it all in the Human Revolution film, I reckon it's going to go the same way. It'll dilute it too much and it won't work. In fact thinking about more I can't see how this will ever work. There's too much to cover. Would make for a great series especially if they included some extra bits like the comic.

The people making it put in as much as they could of what they thought fans wanted. They never really understood the character.

I don't see it happening for the same reason games of movies usually turn out to be a load of donkey droppings. They're just lazy attempts to make some easy money.

Silent Hill, I haven't played any of the games so I don't know how faithful it is but I enjoyed it. It was a solid horror film that relied more on atmosphere than jumps to scare you

Res Evil, Silent Hill and Final Fantasy if I remember looked awesome and was an alright watch.

I worked in the cinema when that came out, it was great :P

Admitidly, that was a nice section, and a great nod for fans. (pity about the rest of the movie :p )

I have heard that so many game rights have been bought up for movies, bioshock, metroid, god of war......etc and nothing ever comes of them. Look at the Halo one as a great example.

My eyes rolled so hard they fell out my head and bounced down the steps of the cinema.

Apparently the Fassen-cock is to star in the Assassin's Creed film

the game's production deserved more than that shoddy engine, tbh and this feels about right.

I retain hope that Ace Attorney is indeed the gaming movie we've always wanted, as some early reports have indicated.

Also: shame on you, anyone who said anything positive about Doom or Prince of Persia. Shame!

No joke: I would love to see CCP produce a feature length film based in the Eve universe. Look at their trailers, they're usually bloody fantastic.

Bumping thread for an update: a director / writer is now attached to the project. The duo behind Sinister , Scott Derrickson & C. Robert Cargill, will direct & write respectively. Never saw Sinister myself, but they're not exactly names to get excited about.

A film version of this franchise has massive potential; it could still be a thoughtful, intelligent sci-fi epic in the mould of the dystopian classics from the past, but let's be honest - all things being equal, it'll be less Blade Runner & more Total Recall (2012)

Mods: I'd say given this is now taking off proper, the thread should be moved to the 'films' forum, no?

It to do with games though, I never check the films forum. Happily leave it here and update as needed I say :D
